Something to think about - when looking to change over...

(I know a few guys in their mid 20's making well over 80K - and home 3-5 nights a week... do you think they could do that working for Swift?)
Agreed.

Last year, I was 23 and I was in the $70s for earnings, but I was home 6 nights per week. This was at a union bakery supply company. Before anybody says I was overpaid, try delivering a truckload of flour/sugar by hand everyday...

This year, I'm in the LTL sector. I will be making slightly less this year, probably in the high $60/year range, because I started at 83% of the full scale wages. Next year, I will be at 90%, and 100% the following year.

Not to mention I was in Central States health/pension at both jobs...

Hometime isnt a big issue now, since my kids are older ( I drove for Knight for about 4 years to be home more when they were younger ) my wife rides with me half the time also. I dont have a pay stub in front of me now, but I pay family med/den and is 65 a week ( or close to it ). That doesnt kill me financialy, my home is paid for plus I dont live in California or the Northeast where everything is a ripoff... Again I enjoy driving for Crete (since January 0.

900-1200 a week - ok... so lets figure an average of 1090...

minus taxes leaves you 839 - minus your "benefits" that YOU pay for leaves you 775

so you are out 18-21 days - so figure 3 weeks plus or minus and figure not paying for your sleep leaves you just about 100 hours a week at your companies "bidding" -

7.75 an hour

congratulations!!! you make minimum wage!!!

look at the big picture Knighton - and realize that you are donating a ton of your time (for free)...

also - look at all the time you are away - who is raising your kids? who is spending time with your wife? do you KNOW your community?

are you even ABLE to be a part of your community being gone that much?

the whole point of the Teamsters working to grab good working conditions is to allow you all that I have mentioned - and to ENSURE via a contract that all of your time away from home (save from sleep) is compensated.

don't be so narrow minded - and consider how your life would be with a job that offers you half of what I have.

home 4-5 nights a week

3 weeks paid vacation a year

5 paid sick days a year

2 personal days paid

all benefits paid (insurance etc) (zero out of check)
awesome 401K

280 bucks a week put into my pension and
(invested for me by the teamsters)

instead of a sleeper at night (day) I get a nice hotel room with transportation to and from the hotel paid

meal allowance

paid holidays - (big bucks)

8 trips you can take 2 days off - 12 trips for 3 days off

plus the joy of working with a group of guys that would do about anything for me. Coworker solidarity that you never find in a non union environment.

options Knighton - you had an option and you chose your current position.

the thread is "how to get a Union job"

you keep posting in here as if you are trying to convince readers you have something better...

this thread was started for those who see the light and want to learn more about "HOW TO GET A UNION JOB"...

they already have what you have - and want better.

if your post are to express your distaste for the Union lifestyle - then take it to "why I hate Unions"

thanks

LATINO, sorry but that is my net pay !!! I see it on QLCM in the truck... Sorry to make you angry, but I'm happy driving for Crete on the national board.

You sound unhappy, and I guess I would be driving for your outfit (Union). You guys lay off drivers including the Yellow side! In fact I noticed you have a driver on this board saying he has been laid off (from your company) over a year!!! So I dont blame you for living on the edge of non security, your job may end anytime. Imagine if you were laid off today, you have a lot to lose, literaly. Im done playing with you for awhile, you just dont seem to get the idea that OTR drivers have more freedom then you do, and happy, so continue do do your time clock runs and learn to be happy! DRIVE SAFE

is your family happy with you gone all the time -?

even if that was net - it is still less than 10 bucks an hour for all time involved. NICE.

and I am very pleased otherwise I would not be on here trying to help other drivers get a leg up...

and it is not an issue of you playing with anyone - someday when you have more than a years worth of experience you will realize you are in a trap.

My kids are in College, and yes there happy (thanks for your concern), my wife loves riding with me. So I dont know what your getting at there. You can try and get as many drivers to get on with UNION jobs as you want but look at some of these posts on the web, you will see unemployed drivers (layed off) from YOUR company. I hope your happy with that. And your math doesnt add up to anything. I have a feeling you would be a happier person if you would drop your Union Trap and get a real mans job.

But, just to make you happy, I will say on this board, I will try really hard to get a job at Roadway ASAP.

knighton5, a few days ago 074344 posed some additional questions that you failed to answer. Was this an oversight or just a I don't want to answer situation. He asked how that compares to the rest of the industry in your opinion.

You never even mentioned how much it costs you to live on the road. How much is it per day.

I saw where you answered about the 401k but not the vision insurance. Does your company provide vision insurance. How much do you contribute out of your check to your 401k. How much does the company match.

Can't wait to hear from you.

Ok, Honestly, sometimes being on the road I must spend a hundred at a casino, or a hundred at a Theme Park, or etc.... I love this Country! I guess you might say there is a benefit to driving OTR... Driving OTR is only as bad as you make it. DRIVE SAFE

Jesus, you can't even answer question. We know you buy at walmart. What does it cost per week! Are you sure vision is covered in medical. Just wanted to know. By the way, I was answering you comments in another post. You will see it soon. Are you home for the three day weekend or are you spending it on the road. If you are home are you paid for Monday. If so how much.

LATINO. Is that a derogatory comment. His name is latanea.

I guess OTR drivers have more freedom. They also have the freedom knowing that they are not paid while waiting to load or unload. They are not paid for breakdowns. They are not paid for DOT inspections. Heck, they are not paid for anything but driving. Lets not forget that the mileage pay is not hub miles. Isn't this nice. You drive 2000 miles and only get paid for 1900. I guess that seems fair in your world . I work 8 hours for you but you pay me for 7. Sure there are some that have to give the company time before they are paid. Why would you give up any of your time. You are a fool. I don't work at a union company and I get treated better than that.

Are you sure that 900 to 1200 is your net pay. You do know that net pay is what you take home after taxes and deductions. I mean what you put into the bank. If that is true, there will be a lot of drivers looking to work for your company. It just doesn't seem like much to me when you take your pay and minus your deductions. I don't know but it seems like OTR drivers make a lot less. Why don't you prove me and countless others wrong.
