I always said they would remember the 'woman' who couldnt back in, but if one of my male colleagues couldnt, it would just pale into the background. Needless to say, I practiced and practiced until I can back in and touch both dock pads with both bumper pads, 99% of the time. I never want to be remembered as the woman who couldnt do...

I have seen many drivers have problems backing into the docks. I will admit, some of the docks move, they must. However, I do not see it to be a woman problem or minority. It is just a driver problem.

You are correct Roadmedic, but as a visible minority it would be easy to 'generalize' so I just never allowed anyone the leeway for that.
And yes, docks do move... I am driving a loaner truck while mine is in the shop, and I was consistantly 3 inches off on the right dock pad in the beginning... but the dock plate still works, so oh well!

I think you need to read the rest of the thread. If you do that, you'll notice that I did point out that stupid people come in all colors. It's just that the ones that come in black are afforded a great deal of protection, certainly more than they deserve.

Huh?

(FUNNY) Go to Walmart (NON UNION) and get your eyes checked, and maybe, just maybe there (cheap) glasses will help you back up correctly. Or you can hire a lumper to BACK UP your truck. LOL

more info...

Ohio and Indiana areas will be hiring HUGE numbers of drivers in the freight division this spring...

abf/yellow/roadway/holland/ups

tenative contract will have provisions to elliminate some job classes - and some "do-all" positions will more than likely be formed.

Cincinatti is looking to expand by 120+ drivers by this time next year (assuming all goes well with new contract - and no drastic change of ops in columbus or indy).

just a heads up -

hiring usually starts in april/may

Are you sure about that cause I know for a fact that ABF and USF HOLLAND in Dayton, Oh have road drivers laid off. Both companies aren't even working causals right now. Unless this spring gets very very busy and frt picks up quite a bit. ABF was on a hiring freeze and might still be on one. OH WELL I hope your right that would be good news for a lot of people.

Our LTL business is very seasonal, and there seems to be way more volume from spring until the stores are stocked with their Christmas merchandise. Then its slower through till spring again. Therefore seniority counts in the slow times.
