How to get union job?

I've been driving over 2 years for a single company, and the company is fairly good. lately, things are getting out of control: miles and hometime are completely unreliable.

A company close to my home (TNT) has recently gone Teamster, if I'm not mistaken.

Of course, I'm going to apply and see what happens, but really, don't you need to know somebody to get such a gravy job?

Yeah, and suddenly become very lazy. Enjoy paying your "dues" for whatever good that would do you.

If its a true Teamster job, then yes, you do need to know someone. If its a fly-by-night union, they will hire anybody and thier brother. I tried several teamster places. They always wanted the name of the person who sent me there. I would say, *My uncle Izzy*. They would say, We ain't got no Izzy, but we got a Ziggy, and he's got no friends.

This is not a "I hate unions" post subject.

Things is, many years ago, as a kid I hand loaded UPS trailers for about a year, and I got full medical benifits as a part-timer. I have nothing but good things to say about Teamsters, from my experience.

I know Teamster drivers are well-paid and well treated. And as far as general workers/unions go, I've dealt with lazy workers at places like Domino Sugar in Baltimore or any General Motors plant in the Midwest.

Yes, I already know the pros/cons of unions, and I'm only looking out for myself, and I know that Union jobs are better, especially as a truck driver.

My real question is: are unions as tight-knit as the reputation? personally, I don't believe they are. By the way, I live in the South.

UPS is one of the biggest most efficiently run corporations in
the world bar none. I would suggest you look much deeper
before you try to get a job just because its teamster.
Not saying your doing the right or wrong thing but there
are a lot of other things to consider. If they just turned
teamster I really don't think you neccesarly need to know
someone to get hired. When I got hired on with Roadway
I never knew anyone. Wish I had.

Ups Has A Good Union My Freind Works There And Good Luck Getting In. And All Union Driving Jobs Aren't Kicked Back And Lazy ( Well Ups Is But Them Guys Are Prima-donnas, Yes I'm Jealous And Showing It) Most Union Shops Though You Have To Put Out Because They Know They Can Replace You. But If You Do Your Job Your Ok. I Worked For A Union Company In The Philly Pa Area And When I Needed Them They Weren't Worth Crap. But They Would Defend The "loads" Who Goofed Off And Needed To Be Replaced Well Go Figure. Anyway I Have Mixed Feelings About The Union But I Would Definately Drive For A Union Company, In Most Cases The Wages And Benefits Are Better

The ones who need to be replaced are often minorities, and they can't be replaced because it wouldn't be politically correct.

The company is responsible for hiring, not the union. In a well run outfit, the employer can afford to hire only internally referred applicants if the turnover is low enough. That's probably why you weren't hired.
