Teamsters Praise House for Blocking Cross-Border Trucking Program

Teamsters Praise House for Blocking Cross-Border Trucking Program
7/24/07
Quote:
WASHINGTON, July 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Teamsters Union
strongly endorses the House of Representatives' move today to block the
Bush administration's cross-border trucking program.
The House voted by voice vote to amend the Transportation-HUD 2008
appropriations bill by limiting funding for the pilot project. The
amendment had bipartisan support, with sponsorship by Reps. Peter DeFazio,
D-Ore., Nancy Boyda, D-Kan., Gary Miller, R-Calif., and Duncan Hunter,
R-Calif.
"The Transportation Department needs to get it right before throwing
open our borders to Mexican trucks," Hoffa said. "The Bush administration
has been too eager to endanger the driving public by rushing headlong into
this risky pilot project."

US house of appeals ruled to change HOS.

Led by teamster union. And couple other groups. Yesterday the US house of appeals ruled to eliminate the 34 hr restart and drop the drivetime from 11 to 10 hrs. THE fmcsa has 45 days to reaspond. As of now we still drive with the 11 and 34 rule.
Sounds like to me it going back o the old rule. Since I have not driven with the old rules. Can someone elaborate on the pros and cons??
But it sounds like to me we are getting screwed out of hours..

I'm not a driver so maybe I don't understand this. But if you drop the 34 hour rule and drop back to 10 hours, then a person could drive 10 hours every single day and never take a day off. It's 70 hours in 7 days instead of 70 hours in 8 days. I'm not a great math student but isn't that a gain in hours?

I actually hate that. I can see companies pushing drivers to drive the full 10 hours every day and never take a day off. How is that better? Driving for 10 hours is tiring enough to warrant days off and it doesn't sound to me like people are getting home enough as it is. So you all will be able to meet deadlines better and it will be less complicated. I can also see how it may help you to get in and out of the states that have anti driving laws and make your deliveries without needing to stay in the state overnight, that is if it's planned right. So maybe that's good, I don't know.

Thumbs down Liked that 'previous' 11/14 with Multiple Splits!!

It's really hard to drive L.A without some kind of 'creative' log booking, since no places to park---the old combo of split sleepers (8/2, 7/3, 6/4, 5/5, etc.) allowed us drivers to do that---could 'sneak in' B4 and after rush hours (which last 6-8 hrs long there!!). But all this stuff is eventually going to push the industry to 'paperless' logbooks!!! That will kill the trucking industry delivery schedules and penalize the drivers---many will be fired!! JIT delivers will suffer and the whole economy will 'slow down!'

I cant see anything good for the future of this industry, just MORE pain!! Sorry Newbies, but it's looking bleak....

I'm not usually an alarmist. I hate to be the half empty sort of person. But I'm getting very nervous. For me personally, I don't need to drive a truck. I can work on other scenarios to get to see my grandchildren when they come a long.

But.. as a consumer I'm more than a little irritated that all these issues exist. As a user of our nations roads I'm VERY unhappy to think that there really is no safe place to drive.

The Teamsters hated the restart because it allowed hardworking individuals to drive over 100 hours in 8 days taking the restart and driving as much as possible. It will still be possible to drive over 10 hours in a day by driving right after your rest break again, but you will be limited to not driving after the 70 hours in eight days and will have to regain hours the old way again. so if you log 70 hours in five days you will have to sit until you get those hours from the first day back again. It will prevent local drivers from going over the road the same way, they will have to wait to get hours back.

Forbidden Exclamation

^%$#%^$## just when I was really getting good at cheating on the new rules !!!!

Now I gotta go back to the old ones??

Yes we're getting screwed out of hours. Not me...but a lot of OTR drivers will be.

The old rules...if that is what they go to, will allow for a driver to be "more" rested, as they can take a nap, if they get tired. Without all the BS we have with the 14 hr rule. But, it will also allow a company to "push" a driver when he's tired. The driver will truly have to "take" control.

NOW.... if they retain the 14 hr rule, and limit us to 10 hr driving....we're truly hosed.

I dunno...I'll have to see the end result on this one...until then the jury is still out.
