Driving straight flat,Class b trucks, Pulling class b truck with heavy trailer making it an class A as well as using the loader Or bobcat. My old boss is good to me and allows me to search for the right, closer driving job. If all else fails I'll be driving and tractor trailer in August in mass again.hopefully my smaller car will be fixed by then. I'm in talks with safety kleen and looking good at stericycle in Woonsocket RI. I'll keep you posted.
I'm hoping to swap out days so I can go talk to the major fuel companies in the area about hiring times, requirements and how to get in to the company. Even if its on the bottom as a tank washer our fueler/yardman as long as its with a major company you can retire from.

I went to the first part of the interview process with stericycle. It went great.
Pay, $16.25 to start maybe 4 hrs of ot a week. THey try for a 4 day work week.(not bad I can do a day of landscaping for extra cash) They pick up medical waste, drive internationals (newer) pull pups mainly. They have 3 areas, small quantity pick ups, large quantity and line haul. The position he's hiring for doesn't have a set route but will drive everywhere.
I applied at a company I missed the last time they were in the paper. They're hiring for a vacuum driver with tanker & hazmat. So I applied. I then ran into someone from school who took the job at Safety Kleen and loves it, unlimited overtime he's bringing home over $900 a week. He's driving a large 10 speed kenworth oil truck. I told him Im trying to get in and who've I've been in contact with. I turns out He use to work with my brother.lol Small world. He said he'd talk to them to see if it will help.
I'm calling ABF back today. A friend who also is waiting for final approval said the TM was sending out a priority email to get him and another person on now. I'll try to see if its me later today. If not it looks like safety kleen will be my big push. They just bought out another company.

I talked to ABF today and the TM told me to reapply so he can have it showup in his cue. It asked if I applied before and to give the date.I think thats what he wanted so he can call and ask whats going on.
I talked to a no touch container company that I'd turned down a couple months ago and they might take on another driver. There getting back to me friday. We will see what happens. That job can be full or part time. If I get into Abf and the keep me on the dock at night I'll probably do part time container full time dock for the bennies. NOW THAT WOULD BE SOME WISHFUL THINKING>LOL

if you don't have a cdl yet but are wanting to go into the industry, how do you join the union/get trained/get work? also, what is GENERALLY the starting wage for union truckers? And why don't more guys belong to the union - like the company guys, etc.?

One way is to get on the dock first. Some companies will train you as you work on the dock. I went through the union school for cdl training which allowed me to join the union. However I still would need to find a union job. In the beginning my focus was just on driving tractor trailer. Now as the economy get worse I realized its not just about driving tractor trailer its more about the future and the big picture.( wow latanea & 074344 would be proud of me. LOL)
The big picture is get in the union any way you can and the quickest seams to be the DOCK. Prove yourself by working hard and good things will happen.
I've restarted the process with ABF do to a snag(on there part). I go back in next week sometime for another face to face with the TM. I also have a couple opportunities that are knocking. Ones better than the other and they're all are suppose to get back to me on wed. I'll keep you posted.
Starting wage depends on what contract they're under. Some union jobs Class b start at $14hr/15hr others Dock/driver start at $16-18 hr then move up to $22 -24 hr in 2 yrs depending on the contract. You also need to look for Overtime after 8 hr a day and 40 hrs a week, health and welfare plus pension.Best of luck
