BigDaddyJollyRob,

Congratulations! You are doing the right thing to be successful in your career choice.

I thought that I was going to be off for the next four days. That was until the dispatcher called and asked if I wanted to work on Monday (a holiday). It is a simple tanker load of alcohol to a customer that is 12 miles away. "They" only hook up 2 hoses while I watch them. It does take some time for the lab to approve. The day will last about 11 hours. I will spend most of the time in the cab listening to the Sirius radio and reading the paper except for when I go to there in house restaurant for breakfast and lunch.

I guess it does sound a little boring but since I will be making $59.10 per hour, I think I can tolerate it. I am not trying to brag but mearly pointing out what can happen at a union job. It seems strange to me that I can make more in one day than a lot of drivers make in a week. No, not strange, more like a pathetic reality of the trucking industry today and how those hard working people are compensated. Sad.

info

your best bet is to ask the local hall - they will have info on your area and contact information to get you started...

BigDaddyJollyRob,

I live in southern California so I can be of no help in the notheast. Superior looks to be OK but it is not union. It may or not work out for you. Only you can decide what is best for you. Wonderman posted a tanker company under "favorite companies". I had some reservations about them but you can check their website out. Do what latanea says and check with every union hall in your area. Keep on them and don't get discouraged. Some jobs take a lot of time to get into. I waited almost a year before there was an opening at my company. Three of us got lucky as three people retired. None of us have ever been laid off and out of 98 employees (35 drivers & 63 warehousmen), I am #25 for drivers and # 71 for the company. I have been there a little over three years. Best of luck in your training and keep all of us informed as to how you are doing. It makes for great reading and an inspiration to others.

P.S. It took 12 hours today due to waiting for the lab test and having to get the tanker washed out. $709.20 for the day. Not to shabby for a holiday. Happy holidays to you and yours.

Drive safe
