The Battle of Blair Mountain

Any of you know about this and it's significance? It happened in 1921, and it was the first and only time in history that the US military bombed American citizens.

Yeah, isn't that when the miners wanted to become union so they marched across west virginia, or something to that effect?

I did not know about The Battle of Blair Mountain. So, I discovered that the significance for the labor movement was the unexpected result of the few pipe and tear gas bombs that the military dropped as a demonstration. As you say, it was the only time aircraft were used against citizens.

The military had previously attacked citizens with artillery during the New York Draft Riots of 1863. I think this was portrayed in the movie "Gangs of New York".

And then, of course, was the Ludlow Massacre in Colorado. Labor gets uppity, labor gets killed. Women and children? Well, they shouldn't have been there, should they? Ya gotta love America.

Not the only time. Philadelphia used a helicopter to drop a satchel charge on a house holding a pack of wack jobs. I forget those people's deal but there are still some around and they protest almost every day. I believe they all take the same last name or some such nonsense.

I just saw a tv program about that. It was hosted by Billy Ray Cyrus and was on the History Channel or the like.
Very interesting.
They also surmised that is where the term "Redneck" came from.... that is, miners who were in the fight wearing red bandannas around their necks.

See kiddies... learning can be fun!

They were called MOVE (no idea what it meant)--probably a little out there, yes.

It wasn't a true satchel charge, it was a bunch of C-4 and a can of gasoline, which resulted in a massive fireball. The result obliterated the house (killing 11 people inside, four of them children), destroyed ten blocks--61 other houses, and left 200+ people homeless. In what can only be called a miracle, nobody outside the house was killed in the explosion. Someone should have been guillotined for that.

I just watched that special the other night and couldn't hardly believe that was were the term Redneck started. The Harlan county war was on IFC a few days ago too.

It was pretty interesting to me though as my Great grandfather, grandpa, dad (for awhile in his early life) dozens upon dozens of great uncles, uncles and cousins either have been or are union miners and the old generation participated in the mine war around here that you can research by googling "Bloody Williamson County"where as the union hands marched the strike breakers out of the county, they shot and killed WAY more of them than they let live...During that time period on up till the late seventies they knew how to treat scabs around here...They died of lead poisoning and even their family was shunned.A brutal but most effective deterent .Now most have reverted back to "ratholes" but with the wages, skilled help and safety dropping constantly and with profits soaring for the mine operators I expect a UMWA resergance any time now.I was raised on food, clothing and shelter bought with union wages and have belonged myself.

They were a back to nature movement. They were a little smelly but they really weren't hurting anyone. If they would have been living in some rural setting down south probably nobody would have even cared.

They built a bunker up on top of their house. And they didn't let people from the goverment like social workers, building inspectors, child welfare, and those sorts of busybodys in.

Well the police wern't going to just leave them be. So the cops started to break down the doors. The Move members barricated themselves in and a shootout started.

So the city decided to drop a bomb on them and burn them all up. Burned up the women and children too.

And the city let about 70 other peoples houses burn up while they were at it. I had a friend that had his house burned.

Basicly they burned up a bunch of people over a zoning matter and some civil disobedience.
