Louisville Union Leaders Ask Governor for Help, File Unfair Labor Practice Charge

Louisville Union Leaders Ask Governor for Help, File Unfair Labor Practice Charge

Quote:
Leaders from Local 89 in Louisville, Kentucky are trying to stop a Canadian company from assisting Ford in eliminating 450 Teamster jobs at a carhaul rail-loading and vehicle-handling company in the city.

Since 1956, Teamsters have been loading Ford vehicles since Ford’s Louisville Assembly plant opened that year. Teamsters have also loaded Ford vehicles since its Kentucky Truck plant opened in 1969.

The Teamsters are now employed by RCS Transportation, which currently has the contract to haul Ford vehicles. Workers earn $20 to $22 per hour and receive excellent benefits under the Teamster contract.

Ford plans to terminate the services of RCS on June 1. Starting June 1, Ford is switching to a Canadian company called Autoport, where workers doing the same tasks in Michigan earn only $10 to $12 per hour with inferior benefits. When Autoport obtained the similar work in Michigan, it replaced the longstanding fairly paid Teamster workforce with a new workforce represented by the Machinist Union, paying the employees a fraction of what the Teamsters were earning. Unless it is stopped, Autoport plans to do the same in Kentucky.

Unfortunately the Governor isn't going to help the Union. They are doing all they can just to keep Ford in the state. Ford forewarned all of it's employees of what was going to happen due to loss of marketshare and profitability. I blame the union leaders because they did not listen. In order for Ford to remain profitable they have to do what is necessary before they are a thing of the past. I applaude them for doing what they can to survive. The teamsters and UAW did not listen, they continue to try and force the big 3 to bend to their will meanwhile the big 3 continues to lose marketshare and profitability to Toyota and other foreign companys. If you owned a company what would you do? Cut costs as much as possible. I am certain that Ford doesn't want to switch hauling companys but they have no choice if they want to continue to be around. The blame doesn't lie entirely with the unions however. Ford and GM and Chrylser have their fare share of blame as well, but if you want your company to be the best you must make some concessions.

wow - 20 cent a mile!

nothing like reducing ones wage and eliminating bennies.

(all to help ford out - after all their tier 4 managers only got a 16% pay increase this year.)

I for one think the Governor,Pres,Mayor should stay out of it.Unions brag that they take care of their own so let them.If they help them then they should do more for the rest of us.But I do hate to see anyone lose their job.
Do I hear an AMEN to that.

They only got 16% increase the poor things. They might have to miss Starbucks at least once a day.

Hey highballin, that's BS!!!!!!!! It is hard work figuring out how to run a 90 year old company into the ground. You know darn well that money they save by cutting that pay in half will come right off the price of the car to make them more competetive, and wont go directly into Ford's coffers. And have seen the price of fine Italian shoes lately! YOU SIR ARE OUT OF LINE AND A COMMUNIST!
