the International sold the contract as a great deal - but in the long run it will cost jobs...

My fear is that the same kind of wrangling is happening to the carhaulers...

be alert - and fight on any point that can be exploited and abused.
You are exactly right, the biggest problem that we have with this contract is the lack of language ie.., what the union black lined. I am a reallest and I do realize that we must keep up with the times and stay competitive in the market to stay strong as a union, and this can be done with out giving away 25 to 40 years of hard fought negotitations. And its alot of just basic protection for jobs and home time and finances. If we as drivers can see how easy its going to be for the company to abuse the drivers with this language, it sure has to make you wonder what the Union was thinking during the negetitations. My vote is by far NO and I would sure hope that the rest will see the dim future iwth a yes vote and send them back for a FAIR contract

Holy crap, 22? I sure would like to see what he thinks when he is 32 and trying to make ends meet. I talked with some Werner drivers in Indy. A couple said they were just holding out till something better came along, usually making 700-900/wk and holding there own. Then I talked to a kid(25 at most). Single guy. He thought he was rich at 700-900. It is amazing how perspectives will change. I will probably never be able to land a union driving job. But I'll grab it if I can. I am only 36, but been in the work force long enough to see too many people kicked around unfairly, and worthless people able to skate by because of friends in high places.

well, it is perspective - I was spoiled when I came to trucking as a career seeing that I had worked as an engineer for a few years after college/military - and was used to 50K +...

but some people think as long as they can make a minimum payment on their trailer home and put some gas in their chevette that they are doing "good"...

I was never happy with "just" that.

perspectives also differ on these last few contracts that the freight guys like myself - and the car haulers have gone through...

One mans "good deal" is anothers "crap".

It has come to our attention that the list used in the current Carhaul Agreement ratification vote
was incomplete and that, as a result, a number of members employed by several companies did not
receive ballots. Ballots are now being mailed to them. Accordingly, so that those affected members
are afforded the opportunity to exercise their vote, the ratification period for all members has been
extended to Tuesday, August 12, 2008. This extension applies to all Carhaul members, including
those who have already received ballots and were not affected by the above-described issue.

All
ballots, including those that have already been mailed in to the post office, will remain secure at the
post office and will not be collected until the close of the balloting period. Ballots must be received
at the Lanham, Maryland Post Office no later than 10 a.m. Eastern Time, August 12, 2008. The
ballot count will commence that day.
We are also extending duplicate-ballot requests

Teamsters Members Reject Carhaul Contract
8/14/08
Quote:
Despite the union's urging to vote yes, Teamster carhaul members voted to reject the proposed 2008-2011 National Master Automobile Transporters Agreement and all of its supplements.

Throughout the 2008-2011 contract negotiations, the union says, it sought first and foremost to preserve and protect the members' job security and job opportunities in an auto industry that is suffering from economic upheaval.

"The proposed agreement eliminated various restrictions so that our contracted employers could haul more cars, thereby providing additional job opportunities to our members and protecting their job security," said Fred Zuckerman, Teamsters Carhaul Division Director. "However, our members have made it clear that they do not accept the proposal."
