Thanks Ziggy. I knew that, was just irked at someone speaking in such broad generalities.
You have a great financial attitude. I wish I thought like that at your age.
I got a late start getting serious, but am debt free except for house.
Was fortunate to catch it at the bottom a few years back and did a re-fi on 5% fixed.
I missed an entire month of work this year due to a medical problem.
Felt good to have a nice emergency fund and not a pile of bills coming in.

Emergency funds are essential for unexpected emergencies . I expected to be out of work 4 weeks for surgery . That's the recovery time . But with the doctor being booked solid 6 weeks keeping me from getting an appointment to be cleared and necessary procedures with my carrier to be active again I was out 7 weeks . We can live on my pay so my wife's pay goes into paying down debt and savings . When we lost power for overs a week due to an ice storm we had cash to buy an 8,000 watt generator .
Too many newbies are taking low paying driving jobs just to have a job . You have to do more than just get by and being on the road weeks at at a time prevents finding finding a better paying local job because you aren't around to apply for it .

We operated the same way for years with my wife's income providing additional savings until she became disabled.
We miss the income, but since we didn't rely on it, are getting by fine on mine.
I am also blessed to finally have a decent job with good short term/long term disability benefits.

Well Im a big Dave Ramsey fan. I guess it just got to the point where I was getting tired of over drafting and not having enough money. I did good until I got into college..then took out a student loan I didnt' really need. Then I lost my debt card and my mom went to the bank and managed to get a visa credit card. Got my first job in Vegas and bought a expensive motorcycle because "I earned it"...moved to MN and then WY over time and bought a new car...traded it later for another new car. Then we bought a doublewide without thinking and combine that with my wifes college loans.....well now we are aroudn 90k in debt.
And so...when I hear people telling me the benefits of x or y job or whatever...I keep thinking...that job isn't going to save you from financial incompetence. All it will do is help you stay in debt. 70k job is a great thing to have...but what is the point when you have 65k in debt and bills each year? lol.

Wow Ziggy, that was a Dave Ramsey call right there.
Listening to that show is like going to an AA meeting.
You just think you have it bad, until you hear the next guy's story.
Sounds like you have it figured out now. It's never too late.

There was a guy at my last job who had the highest miles of anybody. Put a million miles on a truck in just over 4 years.
(No joke. Small outlaw company)
Additionally he was drawing full military retirement since 1987.
Yet the guy stayed broke. What a waste of energy and resources.

I get a kick out of that show. These people that call in and cry they are broke with $90-100,000.00 in credit card debt and their household income is anywhere from $100-200,000.00 a year with high dollar vehicle payments and a.r.m. mortgages.......Keep on spending the gov't will help you out.....LOL.

Yeah I know. It kills me that somebody earning double or triple my income manages to squander it like that. Stupid people should have a limited income, because they are just going to blow it anyway.
All I think about when I hear those calls is how big my retirement account could be.

Some of the items discussed were an increase in mileage rate (didn't specify), less out of pocket expense for healthcare (previous, $100.00 per week. Now, $50.00 per month), Teamster retirement plan and pay for all other on duty time that was not paid to them when they were non-Union.

Hope this helps.

Here is one that I posted before in case you missed it. The last few posts did nothing to answer the OP question. Go figure?

Glen Moore is hauling YRC freight, out of KCMO and KCKS, and have been for close to 2 years. They haul freight that would have been railed...started at 4% and increases annually...some of the furloughed guys from YRC are driving for them currently.

And of course they haul their own freight also...just thought I'd throw the info out there..
