| Agreed latanea- There is so much backstabbing and backsolicitation right now it's not even funny. Never operated that way, and we just had a carrier that quoted some things BS us and take a bunch of loads. Not playing htat game at all- our reputation is worth more than that. Not playing the run-for-nothing game either- when prices come up for everyone, it's hard to get your customer to pay what they should be paying. I know things are tough for a lot of companies, but selling out to survive a few months is only delaying the inevitable. If you're not diversified enough to survive, you have a bad business plan and need to revise your model. |

| man - I hate to even think of it as a "bad biz plan" - a niche market is fine - and a niche market is what I had when I had my own authority (not to say that if lettuce were to fail - I could not have run meat in my reefers)... my produce distribution company lasted 4 years without a glitch ... - HOWEVER food stuffs are a base commodity and not as volatile as "freight" - especially when you base you freight biz on a core group of suppliers (all intertwined in the auto biz.).

| Just a tidbit if anyone is into air freight around slOhio. Probably even be old news by now. DHL signed a contract with UPS in Louisville & will be closing its ops in Wilmington. This is after they recently bought ABX & it's lease on the airport, built a new sort center, new buildings & warehouses & decided to drop everything & leave it. ASTAR, DHL's way around a foreign government owning their own airline in the US, will probably be left to fallow just as ABX was told...best of luck to ya..go find whatever freight you want, we don't care what you do. Nice huh? By the way, DHL is or was partly owned by the German post office. |

| Best of luck to all the brothers and sisters and families affected by Alvan's closing. I hope they can get back up on their feet in due time.

| Meanwhile, share prices of 27 of 36 publicly traded U.S. fleets rose an average of 31% between January and June as reported in Transport Topics 6/30/08 issue, page 1. Granted, performance of the companies and their stocks are two different things. It is all speculation and hope. However, when recovery happens, rates will rise because excess capacity is being squeezed out of the system. The TT article by Rip Watson referred to analyst Rick Paterson who believes as many as six carriers with more than 1,000 trucks could fail in the current economic environment. He said that Werner and Heartland are strong. Investors have fewer choices because Swift and U.S. Xpress have been taken private. Other companies have been acquired or folded. Companies that do not own their own assets should continue to thrive because they do not have direct exposure to fuel costs. I assume that includes Landstar and C.H. Robinson.
