Hoffa Blasts DOT For Illegally Extending Cross-Border Pilot

Hoffa Blasts DOT For Illegally Extending Cross-Border Pilot
8/4/08
Quote:
Today, Transportation Secretary Mary Peters, through her designated fall guy Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrator John Hill, announced the Transportation Department’s intent to illegally extend the unsafe Mexican cross-border pilot program for an additional two years.
The blatant disregard that Peters, Hill and the Bush administration have shown to Congress, which has time and again expressed overwhelming opposition to this unsafe program, is outrageous. They have continued down this dangerous road that threatens American drivers and their families despite a federal law that bans funding for the program.

"Just last week, a bill sponsored by Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., was unanimously approved in the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee shutting down the illegal pilot program by Sept. 6."

That doesn't make it law, somebody get Mr. Hoffa a civics textbook from 3rd grade.

What an idiot.

I think your missing the point in the story. Mary Peters and John Hill are aware of the new bill. (so we think) They are trying to do this regardless of the new bill. This is more like a mexican standoff in Washington.

What new "law'?

A bill is not a law.

Every post you write is totally against truckers, why do you hate truckers so much? are you working for mary peters? why are you so anti american? are you a truck driver? are you an american citizen? do you care about other fellow american citizens.

Just an observation, I dont care if you answer back or notb, specially if it is to continue going on with your ideals. And its not just you, there are a few just like you that hate everyone of us drivers, why dont you all get your own forum?

What's anti-American about wanting people to follow the law as it is written?

I don't hate all drivers, just the dumb ones.

Not that I'm accusing you.

Because they don't take the time to understand and see what has and is happening to the trucking industry.
Or what the out come will be.
and by that I mean the Industry in whole ( Indep. o/op.company dr. small fleets. large fleets. teamsters.)

Flaboy, Just because some of us disagree with the myopic view some have of a particular issue, does not mean we are anti American, anti truck driver or anything else.

Some of us have this nasty habit of being able to smell bovine excrement and look for the answers independent of what special interests want us to believe. That is totally American! 1st Amendment type of American.

None of us hate the other drivers! Most of us are drivers ourselves. I've put almost 35 years into this industry and slowly seen it change from a fun and challenging career with some great folks to what it is today!

If people would use a little logic and common sense, put aside their prejudices and bigotry and seek the answers instead of letting others tell them what to think, all of us would be better off for it!

The other poster is correct! They can pass all the bills they want to, but until the President signs them, or vetoes them and the Congress overrides the veto, they mean nothing!

Jimmy Hoffa has an obsession with Mexican trucks, Mexico, NAFTA, the whole enchilada! He is mistaken in his assumption that you do away with NAFTA all the jobs will return! They won't!

What the hell does he care about the Mexican trucks? Could it be it is because he is not allowed to organize in Mexico like he is in Canada? Could be! Declining union memberships and all.

This administration is legally permitting this program to continue by fulfilling the agreement we made when we signed on to NAFTA. That is the right thing to do.

And I would ask you this. Would we be having this same discussion if the roles were reversed and it was Canada in the cross hairs instead of Mexico? I think not.

You know something else? Since 1992, Congress has thrown roadblocks up to prevent this program from ever happening. And FMCSA has complied and continued forward. OOIDA, Teamsters, Public Citizen and others have responded by nit-picking to death every noun, pronoun, adjective and verb to try and stop it. And they are wrong in doing so.

Finally, with the Dorgan Amendment in the Senate and HR6630 in the House, and at the urging of Hoffa and others, they said to hell with the repercussions and unsuccessfully tried to stop it again.

Let's cut the accusations of being anti American or anti anything simply because we share different viewpoints

sorry but I happen to be a member of a special interest group called the American truck driver,

as the house overwhelmingly voted to kill the cross border program and the senate will vote soon to kill it I look foreward to it becoming law in order to not only protect the safety of the American people but also to preserver the American jobs lost and the downhill spiral of the profits that would happen if the Mexican trucks were allowed to run rampant in MY country.

why is it we are suppose to take our standard of living DOWN to other countries level instead of insisting that they bring their level up to ours??

History has shown those who don't have their eyes and mind shut that NAFTA is a diasaster for the American people, just how many of our jobs do we have to lose, or how low does our quality of life have to fall before the idiots in congress wake up to the fact that they sold us out?

the one thing Ross Perot said that was right was that if NAFTA passed all we will hear is a GREAT sucking sound of our jobs and money headed south.

I have nothing against free trade as long as it is FAIR trade which today it is not.

so keep the MEXICANs on their side of the border and lets stay on ours.
