USA TEAMSTER INFO - Please Read

About every month a new member post questions about "how to get a Teamster job". If you use that question to search - you will find several threads full of good info.

Things all aspiring Union drivers need to know...

First off - "WHICH COMPANIES ARE UNION???" This question gets asked 100 times a year on this forum...

UPS UPS FREIGHT ABF YELLOW ROADWAY USF HOLLAND USF REDDAWAY NEW PENN REIMER (CANADA) STANDARD FORWARDING PENSKE DHL and about 19 smaller carriers... Not to mention a vast number of Car Haulers and specialized motor carriers...

1. You do not "work" for the Union - You work for your company.

2. Paying dues with the Teamsters does not entitle you with a "get out of jail free" card - you WILL be held accountable for screw ups.

3. A common misconception is that once you become a Teamster you will not have to work... wrong.

4. Your driver income will probably increase dramatically - but so will the expectations of courtesy / safety / appearance / and timeliness.

5. You will work on a pure seniority board - which means until you have a few years under your belt - you will probably be laid off during the winter.

6. Most Teamster Trucking Companies (LTL) are VERY sensitive to the economy - and hire / lay off as the need arises. (there is no formula or easy way to predict lay offs or hiring dates).

7. The best advice I can give interested recruits is to visit the websites of the companies you are interested in - and fill out an application. Contacting the local Teamster Hall may not get you anywhere. (you will be working for the company - not the Union remember?).

8. Regional differences exist - but for the most part companies hire in the spring - and lay offs happen when freight slows down in mid November.

9. Most layoffs only effect the bottom 10% of the board you are on... (i.e. 200 man board = 20 men laid off)

10. Most LTL Union jobs pay well enough that you will make more in a year being laid off 3 months - than working OTR for one of the BIG companies all year.
