New Milestone for Union Corruption

Labor Department Secures 900th Criminal Conviction Since 2001 The U.S. Labor Department last month surpassed 900 criminal convictions for union corruption dating to the start of the Bush administration. The milestone is incredible evidence that union bosses continue to lie, cheat and steal despite greater transparency of their finances. For the last fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, the Office of Labor-Management Standards (OLMS) obtained 102 convictions and 130 indictments for cases mostly involving embezzlement of union funds. Restitution totaled more than $3.2 million -- money that will be returned to dues-paying union members. Since 2001 the office has secured court orders of restitution totaling more than $91.5 million. Deputy Assistant Secretary Don Todd made this statement upon releasing the latest numbers: The triple-digit numbers of indictments and convictions obtained by OLMS in the 2008 fiscal year demonstrates that criminal activity in unions is still a major problem. This problem points to the critical role performed by OLMS in prosecuting those who steal from their members. [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link.

How much corporate corruption was there during that span?

Let's not forget that's 900 convictions out of millions of unionists in the US.

Maybe the question should be 900 convictions among how many union officials ? It isn't the dues paying union members that are corrupt . It's the officials entrusted with the dues . There are ongoing investigations that will raise that 900 number and much corruption still hasn't been discovered .

Out of the 900 how many were Teamster Union officals???

this is a link to a more impartial news source.

Red States is a good source - but politically backed -

(kinda like asking the Aryan Nation News Network for their opinion of Obama...)

Regardless - It does not give a breakdown of infractions/indictments based on Individual Unions.

might be a research project for someone to work on.

The sad part about these last ten or so convictions is how light the sentences were. Pay back the money? That's not part of a punishment, it should be a given. Most of them got a year in the clink and some probation for stealing up to 70k. Heck one joker stole from the theater workers? How much dough could those poor saps have to begin with.

No wonder they have so much corruption,,,no fear of the penalty.

average pay well over 60K

(not theatre as in the minimum wage kid taking your money for popcorn at the local cinema)

yep - those guys are the carpenters / electricians and mechanics that do all things behind the scenes when they make a movie or TV show...

I met a guy at a Teamster convention in Vegas a few years back that was a mechanic that kept the Warner Bros. Fleet of classic cars running...

they have over 1700 cars trucks and vans of all ages and makes pooled and =ready for film.

need a Pershing tank and a jeep for a war movie??? they got it.
