WASHINGTON — The truck drivers Hours of Service Final Rule announced Nov. 18 has brought about praise from some and disdain from others.

Sorry, but the Teamsters need to shut up on this one. They also really need to look at the facts before spouting off about 'tired truckers'.

Okay, I get that it really doesn't have anything to do with safety. What is it the Teamsters are really against? Is the extra hour a big issue for them (contract wise)?

Initially, I was not looking forward to this. I work a maximum of 60 hours per week with weekends off. I used to enjoy knowing how many hours I have to the next day cand tried to use it to my advantage.

I was wrong. I enjoy the 34 hour restart every weekend. I still work a 60 hour work week but I find that I can use the new HOS to my advantage. I try to work, yes work for all of you naysayers, as many hours as I can between Monday and Thursday. Those hours are spent working, not milking the clock as others might want you to believe. That will leave me with little hours for Friday.

This week, I worked 4 hours on Sunday (double time), 14 hours on Monday, 12 hours each on Tues &Wed and 11 hours today. That only leaves me 7 hours for tomorrow. They still have to pay me for eight. It should only take me about 5 hours to make my delivery tomorrow.

$1774.29 this week will sure help with Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I really can't see where their problem is?

Drive safe

don't think there are a bunch of "tired truckers" out there running an extra long 11 hours???

ask the Werner that drifted over on me last night and crunched my mirror.

he had left Mass. yesterday morning - and where he hit me was a STRETCH for 11 hours...

howzabout we increase the penalties for running over hours and not getting rest...

i.e.

I propose anyone caught twice running blatantly over their 11 have their CDL shredded on sight .

And reducing the HOS to 10 hours would change this how?

Excellent point. What is one less hour going to do? One less hour isn't going to make a big difference. That's what - 60 to 70 miles depending on what the truck is governed at?

I disagree. What you are talking about is drivers violating the current HOS rules. One less regulated hour isn't going to change their behaviour.

I believe the issue of "safety" as put forward by the Teamsters in this instance is a red herring. What's the real issue?
