Strike by 24,000 refinery workers averted for now

2/1/09
Quote:
HOUSTON – A strike by some 24,000 refinery workers was averted, at least for now, as both sides agreed to extend negotiations for at least 24 hours.
Workers at refineries near New Orleans, Houston and as far away as Billings, Mont., will show up for scheduled shifts Monday, though negotiators will be back at the table on Sunday.
"We have made progress in that there was no strike at midnight," said Lynne Baker, a spokeswoman for the United Steelworkers, which represents more than 30,000 oil workers nationwide. "But there are still issues that need to be worked out and notice of a strike could be given at any time if that progress stalls."

Everyone is struggling! WTF more do they want? Hell Montana put a freeze on state workers for 3 years! Very few people i know even got a penny raise this year! Personally they ought to take what they got as its better than what most people got this year. If they go on strike it may cause a major backlash against them!

When your in to new for have records profits for the last few years..............I would expect the company to be in a bad position against the union.

The percentage of profit or "margin" an oil company makes is most likely less than the percentage of profit the company you work for makes. Oil co's are making around 8% but the numbers are so huge it sounds like a lot! Many other companies have a much larger margin. Would you do 100$ worth of work to get $108 back?

That may be true for gasoline sales but that's not true for other sales. Soda is marked up 200%. The store is where the money is made. Stations make anywhere between 5¢ to 15¢ per gallon of gasoline and it's been that way for along time. And they still have problems staying in business.

The oil companies do NOT set the price of gasoline or diesel but they always get the bad rap of being the evil giants. The time of a single oil company making decent profits are gone. If you look at the successful companies you'll find they have merged with other companies. The trend now is the companies are selling their stations and some downstream operations because it cost them too much. But trying to convince people of the truth about the necessary evil companies is almost impossible. You have to research the industry and stop believing word of mouth.

My dad tried a gas station as a side biz back in the 1980's...

he made 1.5 cpg profit - and most of the store stuff he had to "consign" thru approved vendors per his Texaco contract...

needless to say - this biz did not last long.

He said in hindsight he would have been better off buying a location - and buying bulk fuel - and supplying his own store...

( the texaco (( and most other companies)) deal is kinda like a lease operator trucking contract)

I suppose the strike worries is what they are blaming the gas prices on???????????????

Crude oil has varied from $36 to $42, currently around $36/37 and yet gas prices have steadily gone up the last month.
It was $1.27 in Cheyenne, now its $1.51 to $1.58. You can't tell me that there isn't some market manipulation going on.
