Card Check Process Used by Union Organizers Ignites Fury at Indiana Plant
Quote:
A bill working its way through Congress that changes how employees can create and join unions is facing tough criticism from workers who say it gives unions the green light to use aggressive tactics to get them to sign up.
The Employee Free Choice Act -- known in Congress as the "card check" bill -- calls for an easier system to allow employees to form, join, or assist labor organizations. Under the bill, employees can request blank cards from existing unions that employees can sign to express interest in joining the union. If 30 percent of employees sign the cards, companies can hold secret-ballot elections to decide on unionization.
But workers at the Dana Corporation Auto Parts plant in Albion, Ind., say the card check process has nearly torn the 50-person plant apart after harassment and intimidation from the United Auto Workers union forced them to a secret-ballot vote.

that is a shame, no one should be harased, but i gotta ask, thats one plant, with 60 workers, why didnt they go to UPS Freight's 15,000 workers and ask them what they thought? and ya wanna tell stories, how about this one; when we orginized overnite back in 94, 95, one of our co-workers was beaten in a bathroom in saltlake city. she was put into the hospital, for being pro UNION. ya want to talk about intinadation, how about a 4 hour grilling by the co's " security officer", a x police leutenant from New York City, ramdon fireings, for no reason outher then being pro UNION. this is just a few of the storys i can tell, if ya wanna swap stories let me know.

Little D here is a Story about 2 LTL Barns near me. One was owned by Consolidated Freightways I am sure you remember them the big CF the other was a small NON UNION Place called DD express started buy a former CF driver fired when he crossed the Picket lines during a strike after the Strike ended. Well DD express grew and Grew to the point were he was able to start to compete with CF and got alot of their Frieght from them in this area and when CF went Belly up he took in alot of their former drivers. Well a few years later a few new hires got mad that they were forced to run so called bad runs into Chicago and forced a Teamsters VOTE the OLD HANDS FROM CF TOLD THE TEAMSTERS TO TAKE A LEAP FROM THE SEARS TOWER. They saw what happens when you get no flexiblity in work rules at all. This Company pays at the NMFC agreement and offers a 401K and full BENEFITS without the Union Hassles. Why did the old hats tell the Teamsters to shove it when the old owner was ELECTED to the State Senate he SOLD THE COMPANY TO ALL THE EMPLOYEES WHY WOULD THEY WANT TO SCREW UP THEIR SUCESS BY LETTING the most CORUPPT UNION THERE IS INTO WHAT THEY HELP BUILD AND WHAT THEY OWN.

ironeagle, I'm not sure what your story has to do with the employees free choice act, but it is a good story, and you have some good points in it, but, some things i gotta ask about.

first, you state that DD paid # NMFA scale, doesn't that right there make you say " hhhhhhhhhuuuuuuummmmmmm". what if there wasn't the NMFA? what would he pay then? ya might do some research on the labor movement in America, start around the 20's, 30's. it's a eye opening experiences.

second, I'm not surprised there are teamsters upset with there union, its not perfect, never will be, but a lot better then the alternative. some ppl think if they don't get there way every time that something is wrong, a UNION doesn't do that. what it's supposed to do is do whats best for all of the members.

and finely, id like to address the CF thing. you state that the UNION tied CF'S hands, wouldn't let them make a profit, put them out of business? then i gotta ask, why was it that ROADWAY, YELLOW, and ABF, all NMFA company's were making record profits at the same time? it wouldn't have any thing to do with the fact that CF started a non-union company (con-way), and was funneling all of there profitable freight, and assets to that company, so they could show a loss, and close it's doors (on labor day, no less)?

now lets get back to the Employee's free choice act. if it was in place, then the employee's that felt they needed a UNION, would go to a UNION, ask for help, a orginizer would come to the job site, hand out info, talk to the ppl, and get cards signed. if over 50% of the employees wanted a UNION, and signed cards, then there would be a UNION, and if not, then there wouldent be one. it's just that simple.

Little D my father worked for one of the LARGEST UNION flatbed carriers in the 70's a company called ARTAM. Well yeah the money was decent however was nothing to write home about simply because how much the Teamsters the Mafia and OTHERS took out. Well my father had to make a choice during the Strike in the 70's cross the line to feed his FAMILY or stay on the line and loose EVERYTHING since the UNION WAS ONLY PAYING 40 a week in Strike Benefits and we could not survive on that. He made the choice to cross he was Blacklisted by the UNION. In 1980 he got hurt big time on the job THE TEAMSTERS TOLD HIM TOUGH LUCK AHOLE you crossed theirfore you do not get your disabilty benefits. He did get Workmans thru Artam luckily we took the Teamsters to court and WON they wered forced to pay my father all the back payments that he was entiled to plus interst totaled IIRC over 25K pl;us pay for his atty and also pay Artams since they went after the Teamsters since it turned out that it was a member of the UNION that had sabatouged my fathers truck by doing something to the brakes and almost killing him. Last I heard that man was still in prison. Fast forward 17 years my father now disabled fully vested in the Teamsters pension from his time at Artam was told he would never get it PERIOD because of what he had done to them in the 70-80's. I hear the word UNION and I want to scream all it is anymore is a place that protects those that refuse to work like the UAW at the Big 3. The free chgoice act would be the DEATH of any manufactoring plants left in America think about it you are a company thinki9ng about opening a plant you have a choice between Mexico were it will cost you more to ship it to the US however your labor costs are lower. Then you have the USA were even if you are paying your workers a decent wage your slackers can bring a union in and protect themselves to the point were you can never get rid of them and drive your plant out of BUSINESS.

What killed manufactoring in this nation 3 things one we have the HIGHEST tax rate in the WORLD 2 is UNIONS having one of the major parties in their back pockets to the point were they could even get a bill like this even proposed. 3 is the UNIONS themselves this is not the 20-30's called those that bust their humps get rewarded those that slack need to get be fired and replaced.
