Activists Rally for Bill Requiring Open Voting to Form Unions

Activists Rally for Bill Requiring Open Voting to Form Unions

Quote:
Union activists are rallying on Capitol Hill Wednesday in support of the Employee Free Choice Act that supporters say would make it easier for workers to unionize but opponents call a "card check" intended to intimidate.
The key provision stirring debate is a measure that eliminates the secret ballot that is now required in votes among employees deciding whether to organize.
The law would change so that a secret ballot would be replaced with a signature card. If a majority of people sign the cards, the union could be formed. But because the card signatures aren't secret, opponents say that could lead to pressure and coercion on workers to sign.

"Obama voters did not go to the polls last November to eliminate the secret ballot, and Congress should think twice about taking it away from millions of American workers," said Brian Worth with the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace. "This bill is opposed by Democrats, Republicans, Independents, rank and file union workers, and President Obama's voters by roughly the same margins. The only support card check has is among the leaders of Big Labor who are willing to sacrifice worker privacy and put our economy at further risk to boost their membership roles."
Key findings of the poll include:

  • 73% of Obama voters are opposed to EFCA.
  • 86% of Obama voters believe that a worker's vote should be kept private in a union organizing election.

  • 81% of Obama voters believe that secret ballot elections are the best way to protect the individual rights of workers.

  • 81% of Obama voters believe that Congress should focus on other issues like jobs and health care before dealing with EFCA.

  • 68% of Obama voters believe the binding arbitration provisions in EFCA are risky and unwise.

  • 61% of Obama voters would be less likely to vote for a Member of Congress who voted to take away the secret ballot from workers.

where have you been mooney? have you talked to ANY union workers about this? have you talked to ANY democrats about this? you can find numbers for anything, but i should only have to say this once, "EVERY UNION WORKER WANTS THIS BILL TO PASS."

decert votes are not private. the employer tries to pressure them in public, in groups. so WHY N0T vote a union in view of everyone?

I have this funny feeling you dont like unions, and it seems to me if you were against them, why not say it in public? why not tell others how you feel?

Let's not turn this into a Union/Nonunion fight.

The poll I posted was ALL Democrats, i.e. "Obama Voters". And they don't want it obviously.

Well hmm...
Of course the union workers want this to pass, thats obvious. The problem here is that it pressures individual workers. If you have a room of 10 people and they all do secret ballots, 4 for organizing, 6 against...you have no idea who the opposing people are.

With the card check program...you sign it. You say "bob smith wants unions" or vice versa. THEN, the union knows who is opposing it. Because they have your name and your viewpoint on that card. And try to convince me that Bob won't be harassed in some way or another.

If there is a going to be a vote for a union...then fine...have the vote...no harm there. But don't allow it to be set in a way that tells everybody and their dog who you voted for.

Well 1 in 9 actually according to the polls but hey, who cares about the facts when you are a union member.

because replacing the so-called pressure of the company bosses with the labor bosses is wrong also. Listen we all know why the Unions want access to the names of people not voting in a union. And it ain't so they can sing kum by ya to them.

If you are unhappy with your employment situation, then change it. Nobody, not even "the big bosses" put a gun to your head and make you work where you don't want to work.
Company owners and shareholders are the ones who set company policy, they are the ones with real "skin in the game".
