If it were not for the UAW the autoworkers would be doing that backbreaking work for a dollar a day like they do in other countries. They haven't been paid the 95% pay for a long time. What's wrong with benefits after retirement? People need it at that age more than ever. Also have you noticed a decrease in the price of a new vehicle that is no longer made in this country? I don't think so. Where is all the money going they save from outsourcing American jobs? Can we all say together.......CEO!

So let me get this straight. A group of workers at a factory voted to join a union in your town to improve there standard of living and it's the unions fault. How about getting mad at the CEO who decided he didn't care enough about your community and decided to move the factory to Mexico because he can abuse the workers there because they don't have unions in that country to help protect workers from abuse on the job.

Skinny you HAVE ALOT TO LEARN. Of course being From the UP of MI all you here is HOW GREAT THE UAW is. Ask a Steelworker from Bethlaham PA or a Pilot from Pan Am how GREAT their UNIONS were when the Economy TANKED and their COMPANIES WENT BROKE BEACUSE THE UNION REFUSED TO GIVE ANY BREAKS. Better yet ask an Empolyee of Consolidated Freightways Atram and a whole bunch of OTHERS what they think of UNIONS. Why because they are ALL OUT OF JOBS BECAUSE THE TEAMSTERS REFUSED TO GIVE WAGE CONCESSIONS WHEN THE COMPANIES WERE STRUGGLING. Better Yet ask anyone around Flint MI what they think of Unions when GM asked for minor conncessions to KEEP THE PLANT OPEN THERE THE UAW TOLD THEM TO SHOVE IT. All those jobs were lost.

As a matter of fact yes I have. Nissan has lowered the price of many in their line.

BTW, they start OT this week at the Canton, MS plant. Their NON union employees alternated "unpaid" weeks off to insure the plant would have to make no long term lay offs, this past spring.

They took NO cuts in pay this year. Total time off this year for those employees....2 weeks.

Yes it's the unions fault.

The owner (now deceased) did not relocate anything to Mexico. He shut down 2 plants (in one day) with a total of over 1000 employees, and moved all those jobs to his main base of operations in another state. Global outsourcing didn't begin until 1996, caused by a tax loop hole. Which has since been closed in our state, to insure that other jobs of this nature stay in MS.

You may even own one of his products. "Catnapper" aka Jackson Furniture.

Mr. ironeagle I will have you know sir I am a Georgia Cracker. That's right born and bread in a "right to work state". Moved to the U.P. after my union contract guaranteed me the right to follow my work, a.k.a. Change of Operation. That is a term used in the ltl world. Also the co. paid for my move. So many guys bring up CF and surely you must be aware of a co. called Con-Way. Which is a double-breasted co. from the CNF network. All they did was find people willing to work for a little less and pay a portion of there health ins. and no pension and funneled all the freight onto there trks. Sorry don't know much about Flint, Mi. except it's about 8 hrs. from my house and I'm not in a position to defend or dispute anything the UAW has done because I've never been a member of that union. Now I could spew off a bunch of rumors on a message board about them like you and so many other people do but, I choose to only speak about what I have first hand knowledge about.

Glad he cared so much for the community to move jobs away.

If you can't afford to keep the place open, caring doesn't affect anything.

He provided this community with it's only source of industry for over 15 years. Was in the community for over 25 years. Would hire ANYONE who come off the street that wanted a job and was willing to work.

He told them straight up before the vote. Vote a Union in, and I will close the plant.

I was working the gate as security that next morning, while they were putting the chains on and turning the employees around.

I had been one of management within the plant, prior to starting school, and working security at the plant. I knew this guy to be a man of his word. And told everybody that would listen.

They didn't.

Why bash Obama?

Whats with all the president bashing? He inherited all these problems from the
great George Bush. Give the guy a minute to move that mountain.....
