According to the AFL-CIO at ExecutivePaywatch.com:

"A chief executive officer of a Standard & Poor's 500 company was paid, on average, $10.4 million in total compensation in 2008, according to preliminary data from The Corporate Library.
Excessive executive compensation has taken center stage since the government bailout of banks that began in September 2008. Americans have expressed outrage as CEOs and other executives responsible for the financial crisis have pocketed millions of dollars from bonuses and golden parachutes. CEO perks alone grew in 2008 to an average of $336,248—or nine times the median salary of a full-time worker. Meanwhile, the economy tanked for working people while many companies were bailed out with more than $700 billion in taxpayer money, as well as low-interest loans and guarantees."

Why is it you union types have a problem with a guy who runs a fortune 500 company, is responsible for that company, and thousands of employees, making an average of ten million a year, but have no problem with an athlete that makes 3-10 times that?

Seems to me we have strange priorities.

Walmart is building a new super center in Roanoke VA, they just paid 15 million dollars for 40 acres and 3 houses. The employees at Walmart will never vote for a union. They do not stand together, most employees at Walmart will stab you in the back if they think it will get them anything. I worked for Walmart for 3 years. The management at first was great, they worked with the employees. They would run the registers when we got busy. Then they changed managers on us and the new managers wanted everything done their way. They never ran a register, they just expected you to work twice as hard for the same money. My husband had worked for Kroger before he became a truck driver, and when I came home complaining and was tired he thought he knew what I was talking about. Until he came in one day and saw how busy we were and how much I worked. He said he wouldn't do it for what I was making. But if you are friendly and good at what you do at Walmart, you have customers that see you and will stand in a long line just to get you to ring them up. I had customers that would cuss me out because they thought I was too slow, I refused to ring them up. My son worked for Kroger a union company and started out at less than I did at Walmart, he did not get a lunch unless he worked 8 hours and that was a maybe. They were worse than Walmart. So I don't think a union is much help except for keeping people in jobs. There was a guy at kroger that had mental problems, he would go off at work from time to time. kroger would try to fire him, but the union would step in, he actually went after a customer with a knife. He went to a mental hospital for a couple of weeks and the union had him back in the same job. The union would not let them fire him.

Sweet Pea-I think management has so much to do with any company large or small. Just look at fast food. The difference from one store to another can be huge. Sounds like you had the right kind at 1st. Willing to jump in when needed and able to. People like that earn respect from those they lead. And you know about the others. America needs a huge dose of that kind of leadership right now. Too bad we aren't getting it.

Star WalMart embracing professional representation of its employees?

I know that happened to a store or DC in Quebec a few years back.

My co. is union as well as nearly the entire segment of this industry. Was nearly completely IBT at one time, turnover was unheard of. IBT has been almost completely replaced by the IAM (I'll Ask Management!).

Turnover is astronomical (prior to current downturn), pay has stagnated and work rules were trashed with the IAM's approval. We had a union selection campaign back in '05 due to overwhelming support to bring the IBT back in as the rank and file had no say in what had transpired before.

Our company brought in outside 'contractors' to work along side the line workers. These 'contractors' were little more than 'hired thugs' brought in from outside 'employee relations firms' to intimidate IBT supporters and attempt to influence the fence straddlers. These 'contractors' left almost immediately after the election at the end of '05.

The NLRB controlled 'election' resulted in the IAM winning by a margin of 4 to 1; we all scratched our heads. Our company filed for bankruptcy one year later, claiming 'rising fuel prices' but everyone knew it was the debt to the 'employee relations firms' for ensuring the election outcome.

We had an equally bizarre contract vote the following year where everyone rejected the backwards contract and authorized a strike. The results came back from the international headquarters in Maryland stating we had overwhelmingly voted for the contract by a margin of 4 to 1! To add insult to injury, a 'no strike' clause was included in the 'approved' contract. This is NOT a defense sensitive industry.

Most likely WalMart already has people on the ground (employee relations contractors) who are working overtime trying to intimidate and 'influence'.

Guys and gals it's real simple in my book. If people are upset that WalMart won't unionize and they think their workers get treated unfairly, then don't shop there. Again WalMart has every right to be non-union and no one should be trying to force this down their throats.

Yes the people do have a say.... they can say I'm not going to shop at Walmart. No one is holding a gun to your head telling you that you have to shop there.

Now Smurf, you know as well as anyone that companies can get around those laws, just by using certain language.
