Hormomes and Hair Color

Did you know that taking birthcontrol pills, hormone replacement therapy or just being a woman can/could change the color of your hair?

Having red hair...like brand new copper penny red has been my trade mark for my entire life...this summer it started to turn blonde!!!! So I went and talked to 3 different hair stylist and they all told me the same thing!...as our hormomes change it can change our hair color....my first reaction was oh well at least I am alive, then I got even...

I am on hormome replacement therapy due to a total hysterectomy (uterine cancer) and over the years it has changed my hair,...so I took control Clariol 108!!!! no more blonde~yeah and to think people spend good money to get the blonde streaks I had naturally...LOL

Re: Hormomes and Hair Color

Wish I had a problem with my hair turning blonde -- even though I look terrible as a blonde. I was born with dark brown hair with red highlights that really showed in the sunlight. However, after I had my son, the couple of gray hairs started multiplying very quickly. I color it -- go to Sally's and mix my own -- alot cheaper than the store brands. But, my hair grows really fast -- about a quarter inch in 2 weeks so the gray gets really noticeable in only 2 weeks. I've tried those 'crayon' thingys to cover the roots, but wasn't always happy with the results. I picked up some of the Clairol root touch up and it is so easy to use, covers the visible roots and lets me wait 4 weeks between big colorings. What a lifesaver.

BTW -- if you ever want to mix your own, just pick up a color applicator bottle, some disposable latex gloves, a bottle of level 20 developer (level 40 if you go much lighter than your natural color) and a bottle of the color. Depending how much hair you have, mix equal parts color and developer in the applicator and color like normal. Color the roots only, then after half the time is up, you can comb it through to the ends if you need to 'even up' the color. This will avoid color build up on the ends that will look dull and dark. If you have stubborn gray, leave it on about 10-15 minutes longer than recommended so the gray will absorb more color. The developer will last quite a few colorings, the applicator can be re-used and the color bottles cost less than $5 for 2 oz. I use 3 oz of color because my hair is thick and long, but if your hair is shorter or not real thick, you can usually get away with 1 to 1 1/2 oz of color. I learned this while roommate was going to cosmetology school. He finished school, but was really disheartened with the industry by that time and decided to go back to trucking. Bet he's the only cosmetologist truck driver on the road LOL!

Re: Hormomes and Hair Color

WOW!
Iam thinking my hormones have blonde hair as well and require everyday updates of chocolate to keep my hair a nice beautiful blonde color.

Also your attitude/hormones can change eye color too.

I go anywhere from Green eyes to Blue eyes on a regular basis.
It has alot to do with my moods, temper, hormones, and just plan life that my eyes change color during different times.

Yep! Been many of times people have looked into my eyes and said..."I thought your eyes were green or were they blue?" LOL

Happens alot!
I asked a Doctor about this one time and he said it does happen to people. There is a name for it but, I could not spell it or pronounce it if I had too!

Re: Hormomes and Hair Color

My ex hubby's aunt had blonde hair as a child, then it changed to light brown for most of her life. After age 60, her hair started to get darker. When it got so dark brown it was almost black, she started to lighten it back to light brown. I told her at least she didn't have any grey to cover LOL!

You have that to huh? When I am sleepy my eyes go from green to blue. It also happens if I am in a bad mood.

Keellady is 99% correct on applying the color. MOST color is a 1:1 ratio BUT I use one kind in the shop that uses 1 part color to 2 parts developer sooo always read first. And a tip if you are retouching and you are wanting to "refresh"the ends (after you have applie your color to the new growth) you can either add 0 level developer to the end of the bottle or I add about 1 oz water to the leftover product. shake well and apply to the hair. Then I pull through the clients hair the last 10 min. IF you get the color too dark use conditioner on the hair to help pull off some of the color.....If you color your hair (darker not lighter) using conditioner will gradually remove the intensity of the color sometimes giving you a tired faded look when it comes time to recolor. Alwawys remember this with color all hair except white, is made of 3 colors. Yellow, red, then blue. Blue is the first color to drop out when your hair fades, why us darker haired girls will get that reddish look to our hair as it grows long. So if you get the hair a bit too dark and you try to start lifiting the color out you will lift the blue first leaving you with red/gold tones. best of luck

Hey pony...since I now realize you are a stylist....my soon-to-be daughter in law is in stylist school, and she colored my hair a few weeks ago. I'm like a mousey blonde with good ol' grey coming in...but I found a GREAT color which is like a chocolatey red....I think it's called 'mango'. We got it at state supply store, so it's *quality*. We are going back on monday to find myself a good conditioner that will help hold the color AND tame my frizzies. I tried pro-biotics conditioner...didn't like it at all. Any suggestions that will silken down my hair AND hold my color in? I really love this color...it's darker than I've EVER done...but I like it.
