| Need flooring ideas Ok ladies, need advice here, I am looking to take the carpet out of my kitchen and put something else down, it has to be non slip when wet (for my dad as he is disabled) easy to clean due to a LOT of human and doggie feet, it must also be durable..... I was thinking maybe dirt?....LOL

| Re: Need flooring ideas If your kitchen a HIGH traffic area?? Alot of cooking? A gathering area? Vinyl would be cheaper then wood flooring. Both are COLD floors in the winter time. Slippery when wet. Vinyl in commercial grades hold up real well....The better the WEAR LAYER the better the quality. |

| Re: Need flooring ideas Get a stone tile floor. It's the first improvement we made to our house. We used granite, don't get the finished polished one. Get the unfinished rough surface. It's AWESOME!! Looks GREAT! Best of all it's easy to clean and you won't slip on it. Very durable. With the floor heater laid under the tile it's nice and toasty in the winter. It cost us $8 a square foot but it's worth more. When you go to install it get a rheostat for the heater. If all you have is a off/on switch you can cook eggs on your tile. Julie

| Re: Need flooring ideas I second the stone floor, with radiant heat under........adds about 5 grand at least to the value of your home upon resale.....and is great while you're there.........highly popular with the investors that rehab and resell............. Also, a great DIY project........long as you like dirty work, LOL

| Re: Need flooring ideas We've been remodeling for 3 years now, yes 3 years. Granite or any other stone are excellent but they are not easy materials to work with. We've laid marble for the past month here. I will say the floors were the easiest. The tub surround was a nightmare and I would not recommend that you try it unless have the right tools, which are not cheap, neither is the stone, and some experience working with stone. Fortunately both of us has experience in remodeling from past projects and other jobs we've had prior to trucking. Here's some things to consider before you take that step. What kind of sub floor will you be installing it on? Is it level, square and in excellent condition? Will the foundation handle the additional weight? Here one square foot of marble (granite is sometimes heavier because it's a denser stone) adds a little over 1 lb per square foot not counting the cement backer board, thinset, grout and sealer. That's just the stone its self. Can you live with out access to that room for at least a week closer to 10 days? Make sure what ever type of stone you purchase is rated for a high traffic, wet area. Not all stone can be put in that type of area. If you are considering adding radiant heat under the floor, add another week and at least another pound per square foot depending on the type of radiant heating system that you choose. Make sure you understand the long tern cost associated with a stone installation as it has to be cleaned with only certain types of cleaners or it etches and it also has to be resealed periodically.
