I need help with a project...come on gals

This is gonna sound odd, but I have a barrel here in the house with all my grandmothers sunday dresses in it......I want to take them and make a quilt out of them...one problem just seeing them is still upsetting and I dont sew.

I have tried to find someone who would do it for the last year with no luck, even the yellow pages were a flop....any ideas????? I know having this quilt on my bed would be so comforting, and I guess if ya wanna know the truth thats my only Christmas wish.

Actually I think that is a good idea! At one time Jo Anne's Fabrics did quilts for people or they might know of someone who does them on the side.
I would contact any sewing, crafts place and see if they know of anyone.

Re: I need help with a project...come on gals

Luv, if you don't have a 'Quilt Shop' near your home, check with the ladies at your church. Many women quilt as a hobby and you may be able to find one to teach you, or possibly even start a quilting bee, where several women get together once a week to work on the quilt for a few hours. Depending on what type of quilt you want to make, it is quite simple to piece the squares together. Look at quilt patterns -- you can do this online, and find one that you would like. The 'square' ones are much easier than the 'star' ones and would be appropriate for a beginner. I would suggest a nine patch or similar pattern, or even a log cabin. The toughest part is to match up the fabrics to make the finished product more beautiful. Try to keep similar hues and colors together and it will be more appealing. The actual 'quilting' can be done by someone else. Many of the new 'computerized' sewing machines have quilting templates that make the 'quilting' process much easier. I know many women who will do the quilting for a fee. If you don't want to spend the money, you can always tie the quilt as opposed to quilting it. this will keep the layers from shifting, and is very easy to do. Check out some of the beginning quilt books at your local library. It's not as hard as it looks, and you will have such a feeling of satisfaction if you have a hand in making the quilt yourself. Best of luck to you on your project. You will have to post a picture of it when it is finally done.

Thanks for the suggestions! I will try the sewing/fabric shops in GR and see what they can offer, maybe they know of a customer who does this kind of stuff?

As for trying it myself....that is my last resort I can do crafts but WOW me and a sewing machine is like a routine from I Love Lucy....LOL

I will keep ya posted on the progress

Re: I need help with a project...come on gals

Just have to tell you I am not a sewer ! Give me a pair of knitting needles I can do anything. But a Year ago my boyfriends son was going to have a baby. I decided I was gonna attempt to make a care bear quilt. To make a long story short I sewed, ripped out my mistakes, I cried but I was going to do it ! ( Walt does all the sewing in the family) LOL. The morning of her shower I was up @4am determined to finish by 12. When that last stitch was put in I looked at my work called my mother who can make the beautifullest quilts and cried like a baby I felt oh so good! Chris new I couldn't sew when he saw it he couldn't believe it. His father had to tell him I actually made the quilt.
So even if you can't find someone to do your quilt. Do a practice quilt just a small one then do the other. You will feel oh so good. Will I ever do another one ? NO
Hope you get your xmas wish!!!!

I know how to sew...I had a sewing business for 16 years. I have sewn costumes, school uniforms, totebags, clothing, and futon covers. That is a shortened list. It is probably what I do best..............
