Advice please!!!

Hello. I am very new to the job of being a truckers wife. My husband just got out of school and is in his second week of training. I would love any advice that will help me help him. We don't have alot of money right now and are wondering about how other truckers eat on the road when money is tight. He would like to carry some food because he hates fast food. I am open to any advice about how to make this work for our family. We have been married almost eight years, have three small kids and have never been apart like this before. Thanks in advance for all the wonderful advice I know I am sure to get.

Hi..my husband is also starting second week with trainer.he used to drive 9 years ago but had to start all over because of the time lapse but he knew from previous experience what food items would be useful..some of them include indivdual packets of dried fruit, packs of tuna and crackers combined you can get at the supermarket, bread, peanut butter and jelly, lots of V8's and if his trainer has a microwave, there is a bunch of stuff that comes individual servings that can be heated up. my husbands trainer really stacks his truck and cooler so my husband has had little room of his own but he has managed to squeeze in some iced tea and yogurt in the cooler. He likes to sit and eat one meal a day but it has not always been possible and we are also coming from a low financial state. Hope this helps..

I understand completely - we're tight on money too. My hubby has a microwave and small cooler in his truck - I go to Wal - Mart, or anywhere there on sale and stock him with the microwavable meals. He says there not bad (not home-made), they have the ones now with meat, potatoes and snack. If he does eat in a truck stop, he always gets something big, so he can eat leftovers later - Subs are a biggy with him. Good Luck!!

Been a truckers wife for a few years now....I understand how you all feel. Its hard to deal with all the changes at first but it will get better. Nice to see some newbies to the trucking world who have to deal with the other side of the industry.

We can all support each other and share info....thats what helps the most...good info, support and just helpin each other get thru the day sometimes......

Also new (so new he hasn't trained yet)

Hi everyone, my name is Michelle. My husband is looking to get into the trucking industry but we keep coming up against walls. Like we live currently in Hollywood, FL and it seems we are out of almost EVERYONE's hiring area. We thought about sending him to school first but it costs so much here in florida. Any advice on how he can start and the best approach? We almost went with Stevens transport but thank god for your message boards we cancelled his bus for friday morning right after I read the posts today.

Wishing for the best, hoping for a miracle......

Michelle

Hey Michelle, I'm Lori (trucker's wife for going on 4 years), my husband went to school with PAM (DO NOT DO THAT) - I don't know about Florida, but here in Ohio there is a trucking school my brother - in - law went to, the only problem he had was that everyone wanted experience, just out of school he had none. He did find a very small company that hired him and he's getting his experience that way. I do know that this site is very informative, the guys/gals will really help alot, and they will answer your questions (I think I saw your other post on here too). The forum seems busier at night, so hang on, I'm sure there's someone who's from Florida and will give you the straight up answers you need. If you need anything else, or have other questions, just post they'll be answered.

Welcome to the "truckers wives" club!

Thanks!

We almost did PAM as well, thank god that one fell through also. Just getting really frustrated. It seems to start out you have to risk everything and go with a bad company. It seems going to school will only get his license as you know most want experience to hire. So maybe he just has to bite the bullet and go through crappy schools. FRUSTRATING.....

Michelle

Don't get to frustrated yet, it's only beginning! When my husband first started it was really rough, money is tight, he's never home, I'm indepented but it was really an eye opener for me. Just make sure this is what you both want, study everything, coming here is a really good idea, like I said alot of information will come out of here.

Like I said though, make sure you study everything, and ask questions, I wish I knew about this site when my husband started driving. I didn't come from a trucker family, so I knew nothing. It's been rough, but he loves what he does, he's OTR and gone 10 - 14 days at a time. I wouldn't want him to do anything else, he's happy, we're happy. Read other forums on here - you'll learn right along with him - you'll be so smart, you'll amaze yourself - Best wishes hon, here if you need anything......Lori
