Companies training women drivers

Here are two questions for you seasoned drivers out there: Which carriers accept women as newbie drivers for OTR training? What were your experiences during training? Is there something you wish somebody had told you before you started training?Any and all input will be appreciated! Thanks!!

Roehl Transport does. PAM does too but I wouldn't recommend them.

My husband is a trainer and his company trains women. It appears to be the most hated company, but so far we have no complaints.

My husband doesn't train women because we are worried about "he said/she said" situations and the accusations of sexual harassment that are easy to make, and impossible to defend yourself against.

My husbands friend is also a trainer for the same company and he did try training a woman and had a poor experience. he will no longer train women.

Swift will train women but i think the number of women trainers is low which means they are always busy, and the number of men willing to train women is low so from what i understand, it might take a little longer to find a trainer but they will train you.

I agree with Swizzlestick, my husband is a trainer with his company for him to train women he would have to attend some sort of sensitivity class. Still that doesn't help him if the woman decides to accuse him of some unappropriate action. So he opts not to train women.

Interstate Distributors trains women. They also sponsor a training school which isn't to bad.. I just went through it.. and went through local training and now am on the truck with my husband. It has been a great experience. For OTR, they do have several women trainers.

I would think all trucking companies must train women or else it would be considered discrimination. Lots of people told me during CDL school that I should not apply to TMC because they didn't hire women. I applied anyway and received a prehire. I didn't accept but I was invited to orientation. I was kind of pushed to give Werner a try because they are suppose to employ more women drivers than any other company. I gave them a try but left two days after orientation because I was tired of waiting on a trainer. It also didn't look good to me that another woman at the hotel had been waiting 4 weeks for a trainer. All the guys in orientation with me had left with their trainers and I was a little pissed off that I was still waiting. I'm giving Roehl a try come July 25th and hopefully I won't have a long wait for a trainer. I don't care if it is a man, woman, smoker, nonsmoker, black or white trainer. I just want a trainer so I can get started driving and making money. I understand the hesitation of some trainers not wanting to train women but overall I think it is bunk. These companies should pick trainers with the intention that they will train both male and female drivers or they won't train at all. Why pay these people extra to train if they are refusing to train what may be some of the best drivers out there if given the chance. The way Werner explained it, a lot of the trainers wives don't want their husbands training women and again I say that is bunk too. If the trainer can't train both men and women for whatever reason, that trainer needs to be disqualified and another person needs to be trained to train both. I know there are risks with a man training a woman but there are also ways to deminish those risks too. In cab cameras and such. There are ways of protecting the reputation of the trainer.

This is the opinion of a po'd cdl holding woman who wants to get started driving sometime soon and hates being told that it is taking so long because I am a woman. Bunk! And, I am sorry if that offends anyone on this board.

US Xpress Training women

Well, I just finished my training with USXpress and I was fresh out of school with my CDL. I requested a female non-smoker and got 2 female smokers, but I can't complain. At least I was able to get female trainers fairly quickly. I only waited a few days on the first one. USXpress has tons of women drivers, probably because all of their trucks are automatics? I really enjoy working for them and plan on staying. I am teaming with my husbad right now. If you have any questions about the 21 day training (that actually took 29 days, by no fault of my own) I had after my 3-day orientation, I will be glad to answer them.

I completely understand your frustration... that would piss me off too. I just finished up my training with Interstate Dist. but I had my husband as a trainer so I never had those issues. Interstate has a HUGE number of women driving for them and there are women trainers. We were just at the main terminal in Tacoma, and there was a woman trainer there just waiting to get a trainee. In my opinion, one of the reason IDC has so many women working for them is because of their trucks. Even the older ones (mines an 04) are awesome. Very roomy, lots of space for all the comforts of home, 1500 watt power inverters, some are Volvos and have a table ( volvos are given only to solos at this time)...Although I fell in love with the manual tranny in school, I quickly fell for the auto-shifts, too. It's definitely a nice comfy ride. And if that sounds "girly" lol so be it.

In defense of policies and attitudes about have a man train a woman, I suppose you could blame it on a small handful of women who have cried sexual harassment while having a man as a trainer and destroyed that mans career. I'm sure there are some legitimate complaints, but it comes down to ones word against the other. I don't blame the men at all for being gun shy about taking on a woman trainee. You can say "but I wouldn't do that.. its not fair to judge me by others actions" all you want, but it's really in the best interest of everyone to not have a man alone in a truck with a woman for 3-5 weeks. AND imagine the complications that can arise with a spouse that has an overactive imagination. I can't say that in cab cameras would be a good idea either because of privacy issues. I wouldn't want a camera in my truck watching me get dressed, take care of personal hygiene issues, sleeping, or picking my nose if I choose to. There's a lot of things to take into consideration and hopefully with more women choosing trucking as a career, more trainers will pop up and make it easier for women in the future. I know this doesn't help us women drivers just starting out now.

I did have a weeks worth of local training with a man that went awesome, but it just on a daily basis.. no overnights in the truck, but in this case I know I would not have had any problems arise even if it was OTR with this gentleman.

I know this has got to suck big time and I hope you can get out on the road soon.. I have heard nothing but good stuff with Roehl. We wanted to try to get on with them, but the didn't hire in our area. Anyways.. best of luck to you.. hang in there and be patient and put up with the crap now, cuz it won't be long until you are in your own truck and all the crap you went through to get there won't seem so bad.

After some of the stories about trainers I've read on this board , I'm pretty sure I'd prefer to wait for a female trainer - even if it takes a couple of weeks. I could be mistaken, of course, but I just can't imagine women being such slobs.
