can't make it home on weekends

why is it so hard for a dispatcher to route a driver home when they want to come home for the weekend even for just 1 day?

I'll second that... While many companies will tell you that it's the nature of trucking. It's not !

I can give you a list of companies in my area that route their drivers home on a weekly basis. My terminal alone gets 30 plus drivers home every week. The outfit down the road....gets 90% of their 1000 plus trucks home every week.

Certianly there will be a few drivers that miss out, when you're dealing with large companies. But, not everyone.

Larger companies look for $$$ not loads going to a specific area. While they see loads going to your house, it may only give the company a profit of $50, while another load going the other way gives them a profit of $75...guess where you're going.

Profit margins drive the majority of companies.....not drivers.

It is the nature of the beast more than company drivers want to admit. I've been independent and looking for loads can be very challenging. Trust me, there is not always a load going exactly where you want it to on the exact date you want.

That's mostly true. But, as with any job/career, you build a reputation and a close working relationship with other individuals who can "make or break" you. When brokers know they can count on you every time, they are more likely to send good loads your way. I've had to work at it from that end too.

As an owner op, you're more likely to be dealing with just a few brokers/companies. As a company driver, I deal with 2-4 dispatchers, who deal with 2-20 customer reps, that have 20-50 companies they represent. Lots of loads....

And TRUE, the load may not get here on the exact day I want off. So I have to take an additional day, as a rule. A day earlier, or the day after.
But, I'm willing to do that if it means getting the day I want. To do otherwise would be totally unrealistic/insane.

The company I am currently with. I am dealing with "hours" not days. I want to be home Friday....it could be 12noon, or it could be 9pm. Occasionally (rarely), I hit a snag and don't get in until saturday morning. But that works too
