Why Women Worry So Much

Why Women Worry So Much
9/28/07
Quote:
Scientists have known that on the whole, females of all ages tend to worry more and have more intense worries than males. Women also tend to perceive more risk in situations and grow more anxious than men.
Now we know why.

Women are more likely than men to believe that past experiences accurately forecast the future, according to two new studies.

The research, involving both 3- to 6-year-olds and adults of both genders, tested the extent to which participants' thought that worry can be caused by thinking that a bad event that happened in the past could happen again in the future. (This skill, in its simplest form, is critical to social understanding as it is important to making decisions and assessing risk.)

For the first study, subjects listened to six stories that featured characters harmed by another person or animal in the story. Many days later, the character felt worried or changed their behavior when confronted with the same wrongdoer who had hurt them before. (For example, if one little boy stole a toy from another, the child might be worried when he saw that boy again and hide the new toy he was playing with.)

The second study was the same, except that the person or animal the character ran across later only looked similar to the one that had harmed them before.

I also think that..women worry because of the mothering/nurturing instinct built inside of them...you know, the mama bear always keeping an eye on her cubs!!

I think you are half right Jam. We women are natural born worriers but some of our worry also comes from the 'past experience' thing too. For me personally it is a total 50/50 crap shoot.

I think by our birthright as nurturing souls we are on constant watch to make sure our children, spouses, family and friends always have what is needed first and foremost. Even to the extent of putting ourselves on the back burner and making sacrifices to balance it all. I’m a giver so to do so makes me feel good to put them first but it can be a double-edged sword also.

The real trick in that bag of treats is in knowing when to back off and let them establish their own boundaries and in knowing when we have to surrender and just sit tight and watch. Not and easy task I can assure you.

It’s not that we want to be control freaks or anything, it’s just instinct as you say. Women are hard wired different than men and that’s just the way it is.

Past Experience is also a major factor. Depending on the past experience it can leave one jaded & cautious or warm & welcoming. Past experience also dictates how we perceive ourselves and self worth. I’m in no way demeaning a mans feelings but I think due to our nurturing ways women need just a little more feedback in letting us know we are doing right by those we love.

Sheesh I’m long winded tonight……must be that worry thing creepin in….lol.
