Try honey for children's coughs

Try honey for children's coughs
12/3/07
Quote:
CHICAGO - A teaspoon of honey before bed seems to calm children's coughs and help them sleep better, according to a new study that relied on parents' reports of their children's symptoms.

The folk remedy did better than cough medicine or no treatment in a three-way comparison. Honey may work by coating and soothing an irritated throat, the study authors said.
"Many families are going to relate to these findings and say that grandma was right," said lead author Dr. Ian Paul of Pennsylvania State University's College of Medicine.
The research appears in December's Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine
Federal health advisers have recently warned that over-the-counter cough and cold medicines shouldn't be used in children younger than 6, and manufacturers are taking some products for babies off the market.
Three pediatricians who read the study said they would tell parents seeking alternative remedies to try honey. They noted that honey should not be given to children under age 1 because of a rare but serious risk of botulism.

Being a father, I have actually heard of this before. Never tried it. Something that I did try...

My daughter burned herself with mommies cup of coffee when I was at work one day. While coming home for this event, the mother in law told my wife to put toothpaste on the burns to sooth the pain and cool the skin. It calmed both baby and mommy instantly. Upon arrival at the clinic, the nurses and doctor were dumbfounded by the toothpaste, but after examination, the doctor was amazed at how well it actually worked. It cooled a BAD burn enough to prevent blistering and cooled the effected area enough to reduce the pain. Her mom is a nurse in Thailand, not sure were she picked that tid bit up, but it worked.

We always used lemon and honey for a cold and sore throat. Just squeeze some lemon, mix it in with the honey, and send a teaspoonful down the hatch. Works really well.

Honey and lemon is wonderful for sore throats. Got my Dad to try it due to his throat being swollen from radition. Been trying to get to try it for weeks. Wishes he tried it sooner.

Yep, the toothpaste will work on minor burns. Now these aren't the modern day, politically correct cures, but, I remember when I was a kid and would get stung by a wasp or bee, my dad would take some tobacco out of a cigarette and wet it in his mouth, then put it on the sting. It actually would stop stinging and made it feel better. My Grandmother would give me her homebrew cough/ cold syrup. It was a mixture of Honey, Lemon and Jack Daniels Whiskey. Not only would it calm my cough, but it would help me sleep very well as a kid. Understand, that Cajun and Country folks down here looked at it as something medicinal, that worked Back then. And it did work. I guess they would be arrested today.

I have several friends who are nurses, and they agree with me that all this about not giving cold meds to small children is silly. I guess it's those goofball parents who give their kids too much that have given the meds a 'bad name'.

I've raised 4 kids, my youngest is 8. I now have a 9 month old grandson. They have all been raised on cough meds if they have coughs...it DOES ease the symptoms when done properly (not overdosing that is )...why make a child suffer when there is something out there that can help? The one thing I've never found though is a med that REALLY eases the pain of sore throats. We suck on lemons here for that...have never tried it with honey, maybe I need to get some.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
