Online dating brings hope and frustration

Online dating brings hope and frustration

TORONTO (Reuters) - Online dating renews women's hope in love and sex, but can be just as disappointing as the real-life dating scene, according to new Canadian research.
Susan Frohlick, an anthropology professor at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, says the women she surveyed gained a sense of empowerment from their online dating experiences.
But they still wanted the man to make the first move and expected him pick up the tab.
"Women are finding it as a useful tool to enter into the dating world, they find that it's safe, they find that they can be a little more bold than they would in face-to-face relationships," Frohlick said of her survey, which looks at how women over 30 view online dating.
"But, at the same time, they are experiencing frustration because it does seem that the Internet in many ways is just the same old bar scene."
Complaints include a preponderance of men who are looking for much younger women, as well as men who misrepresent their looks, interests or marital status, or who show little interest in moving the relationship offline, she said.

I met my wife online back in 1997, before it was a common thing. Long before Match.com or eHarmony.com, it was hit or miss back in the day.

AOL chat rooms were the "bomb" as the kids used to say. Not sure if they still exist though.

I'm sure some do but I don't. I don't see any point to ever lie about anything. People either accept me for who I am or they can screw off.

I don't have time to entertain liars, cheats or thieves.

I just have to throw this in here because I still think it's SO funny.

This guy I used to work with was one of these ego men...extreeeemely full of himself. His girlfriend was never quite enough for him I guess, so they split and he hooked up with an online dating service. After a few dates, they found him his 'perfect match'.

Imagine their surprise when their 'perfect matches' turned out to be....EACH OTHER!!!

Exactly. I met Mike over the internet back in 2000 when it was just starting. It's all in what you say, what you ask for, what you expect, how you word your questions, how you read the answers, etc., etc., etc.

I gave anyone who answered my LONG message a very detailed interrogation, almost, lol, before I'd even talk to them via chatroom or telephone or whatever.

If you lie or they lie, it's not very hard to figure it out if you ask enough questions and watch the answers closely!!!

LOL Mrs. Skidmarks!!!! That's a good one!!!!

I met my current S.O. online. There are pluses to on-line dating. For one thing, you can keep someone at arm's length until you are comfortable about meeting. I've been on a couple of pay sites - one was such a ponderous, lengthy process to even get the chance to email someone, I would give up and lose interest before we got to that point! I met my SO on a free site. He contacted me first. I didn't think I would have anything in common with a truck driver, but thought he might be interesting to talk to. So we met in a public place the first time, and four hours later, agreed to meet again. And again. And again. Then he had to leave the country due to a family illness, and he will be back soon. He planted the seed for the idea of me learning to drive, and the two of us being a team. So I am now in school. The day I have my CDL in hand and we have a job, is the day before I turn in my resignation where I work now!

I guess you could say on-line dating changed my life!

I've had my share of weirdos, but I have also dated some very nice men. I've made a lot of friends (male and female) through the site where I have my profile. I think a lot of it is attitude. If you go in thinking that men have to contact you first, you may be waiting awhile. That first contact is just as hard for men as it is for women. No one wants to be rejected, whether by email or in person. And picture is always nice, and meeting someone face to face is also good, but if all you are looking for is handsome or beautiful, you probably aren't going to find those people on dating sites! I could just as easily say from my experiences that there are a lot of younger men looking for older women!

And yes, there is a HUGE bias in that article, since it only surveyed women over 30. And maybe the majority were negative, bitter, lonely hags. (And how many is anyone's guess.)

Online or in public--your gonna meet morons and weirdos--just gotta be cautious either way. As far as the liars--it does go both ways. In my opinion--there are lots of both men/women that do it but there is no need in it. One day--you will get caught up in it.. I am just one of those thats take me as i am--like it or leave it.. I dont try to be something I aint and dont try to make myself a liar. I have always been a horrible liar so why waste my time trying? LOL
