Mom to Sue School District Claiming Son Was Bullied to Death

Mom to Sue School District Claiming Son Was Bullied to Death

1/16/08
Quote:
LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. — The bedroom bears the telltale signs of a typical boy on the cusp of his teen years: discarded food wrappers, video game consoles, clothes scattered on the floor.
The disarray hides tragedy inside the suburban Kansas City home. The room is a memorial to Brandon Myers, who killed himself in February 2007. He was 12.
For Kim Myers, her youngest son's death is the result of what she calls incessant bullying that his teachers and other administrators at Voy Spears Elementary School failed to stop.
"He was teased in class on the day he died for acting depressed," said Myers, a single parent. "He was screaming for help. If he had got the help he needed, he would still be alive."
The details of how Brandon was harassed — and the school's response — are incomplete. Myers has hired an attorney and said she plans to sue the Blue Springs School District for her son's wrongful death. She and her ex-husband, Brandon's father, don't want to jeopardize the pending lawsuit by discussing it publicly.
A school district lawyer said officials would discuss only Brandon's "educational experience" with The Associated Press, and then only with his parents' permission.

I wonder if he was on antidepressants. They are very dangerous in children.

Why does this happen?!??!!! I've heard of this way too many times in the last few years - kids bullied and beat up and they do NOTHING!!! It's so unfair!!! In my school days, kids like that were kicked out of school and sent to "reform school".

It's so unfair for kids to have to put up with this crap and the TEACHERS and ADMINISTRATORS bullied him, too??? Nothing can compensate this parent for the loss of her child but I hope she wins. Maybe they'll change something so it doesn't happen again but I doubt it.

It's sickening that kids are allowed to get away with hurting and bullying other kids EVER in school. Drives me nuts. And the parents can do NOTHING!!!!!!!

But on the other side of the arguement, in the old days the boys could slug it out and then get on with life. Now they get get so much pent up energy and they can't get it out the way that boys do. And when the school tries to do anything to the kids that are the bullies, their parents whine and complain and hire lawyers. No one can do anything anymore. But the victims need to be taught that they are in control of themselves, that the bully can't bully them unless they allow it. Instead, we teach them to be victims.

Its the teachers, administrators, and so called doctors that do this to kids. They label them with some kind of letters makin them think something is wrong with them and then they put them on drugs to "calm them down". Kids are goin to be kids--this kid had more issues goin on. Maybe he was tryin to be "cool" and did some drugs. It happens in the schools everyday. Middle school kids are getting more drugs than the high schoolers. I know from experience--my son came home from school high on pain pills once and 5 teachers seen him but no one said a word. It was me that had to call the school and ask the dumb pricipal was they giving away drugs in the cafeteria or something. Everyone always wanna jump and put their kid on prozac or something similar and these drugs will alter their thoughts if they take them long enough.

Ya its pretty bad they almost need metal detectors mandatory in all schools not just the ones in the bigger cities. Personally, if schools are good enough to need a cop there all the time--they prolly need an additional measure as well.

I so agree with this statement. In the good old days the pecking order was established with a couple of fists and a bloody nose or two. No one sued anyone and things were over with. Even the school bully would meet his match one day, and get put in his place by some kid that wouldn't put up with his garbage.

Now days, two kids go at it, and they are both put on probation. Like its the end of the world and they are little criminals. This country has over policed our kids to the point that half of our high school here is on probation for one thing or another. Its just sad that kids are no longer allowed to make mistakes and their parents aren't allowed to teach them the lessons anymore.

Ya you got that right. Not so funny story here--my son got into a fight at school--they tried to get him on assault charges because he was the bigger kid. Finally-decided if he went to "anger management" classes they wouldnt press charges on him but he did get expelled from school. And we are not talking about high school here--he is in middle school--no weapons were used just their fists. A bruise to the face and a few scratches -- nothin major. Here where we live they have mostly zero tolerance for almost anything but I respect that. I just felt it was a little severe for his first and only fight at the school. But you gotta deal with the school policy. I am sure he will learn from this or i hope so!
