| I know this is a common practice in some places/cultures....but it just grosses me out. And to think they chewed the baby's food when they had MOUTH SORES? That is just so nasty. I just lost my appetite for breakfast. |

| Oh my lord!!! This is horrible. I wonder did the aunt know that she was infected with A.I.D.S? So sad...I really feel for the mother. I know you guys are really grossed out by it, but I must admit that in the past I've done this a few times with my kids . I didn't do it on a regular basis or anything (when they were out of the baby food stage, but still had only a few teeth, I just made sure I cut up meats and such really good before giving it to them) but I would do it if we were out and I didn't have access to utensils and the food was too hard, like a burger or something...Heck, I'll be honest and say that even at home when utensils were a-plenty I still did it, lol....but the weird thing about it is that I wouldn't let my husband do it...(like it was "okay" for me, I know....) because the thought of anyone else doing it grossed me out. To me it was like breastfeeding. I breastfed all my babies - and through this avenue alone - we shared body fluids, so it seemed natural to me. I think culture does play a role, but it could be just what's considered "normal" to a particular family as well, no matter the race or culture. I had seen women in my life do it when I was a child. In this day and age however, I think it should definitely be re-evaluated by moms because you can never be too careful. A spouse (due to infidelity) could unknowingly infect you or you could contract something somewhere else, so it's best not to do this if you're looking out for the best interest of the child. You can never be too careful... However if that was THE ONLY way for my baby to get fed because he/she just could not eat the food in it's original state, I'd have no qualms about pre-chewing the food, jmo... |
