Spanking May Lead to Sexual Problems Later in Life

An analysis of four studies by Murray Straus, co-director of the Family Research Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire-Durham, found that children who suffer physical punishment in the form of spanking, hitting or slapping are more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior as adults, it is reported by USA Today.

The study, presented Thursday to the American Psychological Association, suggests that spanked children also are more likely to be "physically or verbally coercing" to a sexual partner and engage in masochistic sex, including arousal by spanking, later in life.

Elizabeth Gershoff, an assistant professor of social work at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, who reviewed 80 years of spanking research in 2002 in the APA's Psychological Bulletin, said Straus' work appears to be the first to link spanking to sexual problems, USA Today reported.

Gershoff said that even though many children are spanked by their parents, future problems often depend on how the children process the experience and whether they ultimately equate love with physical pain.

I may not be a researcher, but I still don't agree with that.

You can bet if one of my kids ran out into the street as a toddler they'd get their bottom swatted. I REALLY doubt that has turned any one of them into a sexual deviant.

While we're at it, let us avoid all punishment of our children in any manner...let's just always talk it out with them calmly so we don't bruise their self esteem or make them serial killers by hollering at them once in a while.

What a crock of bunk!! Of course, there are many "definitions" of spanking, too. Some define beating as a spanking so I could see where they'd get that. A real spanking, swatting a kid on the backside with your bare hand, will not lead to any problems later in life in my opinion.

I agree with you there.

Perhaps if a child is BEATEN, or in other words abused, then I could see them seeking off the wall stuff as adults. That comes from a lack of self esteem, from needing to feel loved and wanted, so sure, abuse can have a profound effect on someone sexually, as well as within any relationship.

I think they should define *spanking* a bit more though, I'm afraid alot of people are going to get the wrong idea and just let their kids rule the roost so to speak.

The anti-spanking movement will REALLY be celebrating over this last 'finding'.

I think they're just plain LUCKY their kids didn't 'go bad'. LOL!!!!!

Got to love the time outters..Send them to their room thats a good one.

They have their cell phone Ipod computer and what ever else kids have today.

When I was growing up you never heard about all the shootings in school kids beating up teachers and bus drivers..You respected your elders and you knew if you messed up in school your parents would get a phone call and you got your BUTT whipped when you got home..

or you heard the famous words wait until your dad gets home Today the kids are lucky if they even know who there dad is

Geeze , I was spanked when I was kid and I turned out OK ....

And I still like a good spanking now and then !

perhaps if the principals were allowed to beat some unruly
##### once in a while and the parents were allowed to do more than time outs without being charged with child abuse we wouldn't be reading about things like columbine or all the shootings going on from these children that only know that whatever they do, that the worst that will happen is that they will have to sit in a corner for 5 minutes!!
Send them paddles to the shop and drill some holes in them, it cuts down on wind resistance

Ok, so now I can see this coming up in court, for some whack job that molests someone.

"Well judge, you know, his parents spanked him as a child, so its really not his fault!" >> says the blood sucking defense attorney.

WHAT A CROCK!!!

And we did have paddles in the principals office at my school growing up, and it got used! We were all scared to death of the principal. I still remember the feeling when he would walk buy us in the hallway.

This is rich, lets give the whack jobs more excuses. Just what they need. NOT!!!

another example of off centered persons, making a living off of grants, to come to conclusions that no one is interested in.
