Moms' new battle: The food price bulge

Moms' new battle: The food price bulge
4/21/08
Quote:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- As American families face the double whammy of higher gas and food prices, moms nationwide are resorting to considerable ingenuity to stretch their monthly grocery budget.

For instance, Christina Pond of Arlington, Texas, makes her own detergent.
Pond, 26, a stay-at-home mom with an almost 8-month old daughter, does four loads of laundry every other day.

"Detergent is very expensive, so I make my own," she said.
She grates natural soap, boils it, adds Borax, baking soda and essential oils, and lets it cool overnight.
"I make five gallons at a time," she said.
Her husband is a bartender, and the rising cost of living is making it difficult to make ends meet.
"I am constantly trying to find ways to cut corners," she said.

Yeah, I just paid $124 for the same groceries that would have cost me $90 last summer. This blows!

Price of every thing is going up. Items at the inconvenience stores, fast food restaurants, etc etc etc etc etc.

Hey, isn't this a good thing? Increased consumer prices are (in part) a function of increased transportation (read: fuel) costs. All this means is that O/Os are finally going to start getting a few extra CPMs to help defray the rising cost of diesel fuel.

I'm sure not happy about rising prices, but I sure can't pretend to be surprised about them. I'll just have to start buying my filet mignon wholesale!

I can't say that the O/Os or Indys are seeing any profit at all. Don't know who is getting it, but it sure isn't them.
Mayhap the brokers are lining their pockets once again?

The prices at the market are awful, just awful. 4$ a gallon for milk.
And eggs, Augh... don't want to think about that.
Thank goodness we got a beef and hog last Dec. Have that to fall back on.
I shop at the discount bread store and will start going to discount markets, like Aldi's. Feeding 2 17-year-old males is an expensive endeavor.
Not to speak of Ratchet's supplies when out on the road.
Mercy!

I choose to be an optimist GearJammer! My grandparents survived the Great Depression, and passed their skills and beliefs on to me.... If they can survive that, I can and WILL survive this, and carry my people with me!

I agree with this statement. There are a lot of Americans out there that need a wake up call, that the world isn't alway going to hand them everything. This might be what is needed to humble some of the spoiled brats that tend to make our lives miserable every now and then.

It never hurts anyone to struggle a little, or work for what they get.

Honestly, I can't wait to see the plastic surgery industry go back to being something that helps burn victims and disfigured people, not spoiled barbie dolls that have nothing better to do with their money.
