When Roger Wilbur and Kari Patterson set off on a 10-day delivery, they thought they would be home before a more important delivery: the birth of their twin daughters. Three weeks later, they were still on the road and suddenly at the mercy of strangers in Baker County, Fla.

The couple was in route to Jacksonville, Fla., to deliver an industrial convection oven for shipment to Saudi Arabia. Patterson hauls oversize loads in her own rig, while Wilbur drives the escort truck.

The haul seemed normal when the couple left Cheetah Transport in Texas, but things soon changed as they experienced delay after delay along the route. The 10-day trip turned into a three-week trip. By May 10, the oven finally had been delivered, but Patterson’s due date was growing ever closer.

“There was a lot of stress on her ‘cause the load she was carrying was 24 pounds. It couldn’t be taken just anywhere,” Wilbur said. “I really thought we’d make it back before the twins were born.”
