Horror stories all proved false

When I started training, I was "warned" by what seemed like almost everyone that life on the road was dangerous, especially for women, and I should get mace, avoid all truck stops, don't talk to strangers, etc. I've been driving for two years now, and have never had anything worse occur than a handful of guys with staring problems and some inappropriate comments.

Is this the case for all the ladies out there, or has my experience been unique? My guard has dropped considerably over the last two years, and I wonder if getting complacent is a good or bad thing.

Most guys I talk to are great people. I live in my truck, have a few friends I call and visit, but it's nice to talk to someone face to face more than once a month. There's still so few women on the road, that often men are the only option!

Am I putting myself in danger, as everyone warned me, or were they just parnoid?

I drove for 5 years before becoming a Dispatcher and I have to tell ya, I was on guard when stopping at truckstops, rest areas and etc.....

If you want to call it "Paranoid", so be it.

BUT, I never was totally relaxed out there. Actually, Iam not totally relaxed when I go to the store around town either.

ALOT of the MEN drivers that I work with now, tell me to some extent they are cautious as well.

SO, I don't believe it's just a woman thing. I believe being cautious and alert is the KEY to keeping safe.

1nonly...I have been a driver for over 30 years & truthfully have only had ONE experience in that time where I was truly afraid, & let me tell you it changed alot of my outlook.

I am ALWAYS careful, cause ya never really know. Myself, I run in the Arctic, so it's extremely isolated & we MUST depend on one another for our very survival, but that doesn't mean I not careful.

Please, don't be complacent...ever. Your life may depend upon it. Always be aware of where you are & what is around you. Cause the one time you are not...

Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm not so sure it is just a woman thing either. My husband as well is very cautious and always looking over his shoulder.

Thanks for all your responses.

Sometimes I feel guilty about having my guard up all the time. I know you can never tell what somebody is thinking and as vulnerable creatures we have to be careful.

But aren't people innocent until proven guilty?

I used to go out with my husband frequently. The truth is, I am more relaxed in a truckstop than I am at home! But I never settle into being complacent.

It's supposed to be that way, but sadly, the percentage of people thinking you are guilty before innocent has risen with the last few years, and it's getting worse.

Yes.. And no... Until someone has proven themself to me, they are always kept at arms length. That space has given me the edge when needed numerous times.

Nothing wrong with alittle paranioa, i have found 9 out of 10 male drivers will except me, most want to give me a hand if needed, or even chat about something different, rather than the same old same old,,,
Truck stops, all drivers stick together and would let no harm come to me, what ever there reason is for this, hence my barriers are up at all times, and i can tell you am no beauty, but small, i like to think they want to take me under there wing.
I was brought up with my dad and 3 brothers, so i get on with most males, suppose my upbringing helps, working in a man world.
