New Trukers Wife

My husband is due to start truck driving school in March and I am just wondering what I am in for as a truckers wife. Will he really be gone that much? What do you do for vacations? Anyone travel with their husbands? This is a bit how I feel right now - whirlwind!!!

lol my husband is a newby too and has been on the road only a few months. I started a blog to keep track of where he goes etc. and that has helped me to be able to vent..and you WILL need to vent. LOL

DH was in training school for almost 3 weeks, then on the road for a solid 5 weeks of training with his company he signed on with and then when he got his truck he was home about 4 days a month (every other weekend). He did get to come home for a week during Thanksgiving and another during Christmas but it was without pay of course. Miraculously he just landed a dedicated run so he should be home more like every weekend now. woohoo!

I remind myself that all of these men and women have felt just like I do at one time or another. They have been there done that, yes even the silly things I think of they have been there thinking it to. It does help to come here and read the good and the bad.

Welcome to the forum, glad you found us. Being a truckers wife is an experience that will make you a stronger and better woman. There are challenges depending on what company he drives for but, we all understand everything you are thinking and feeling as you progress down the road.

Ask lots of questions here, even if you think they are "silly" most of us have had the same thoughts too. Remember you can VENT/RANT here too....we have all done it. VACATIONS: my hubby gets 3 weeks a year and most of that time he spends here at home, we take day trips and just hang out together for a week the other 2 weeks he saves and uses for family emergencies etc.

Thanks to all of you who wrote back. I am still a bit nervouse about all this as our life will drastically change I think. But, he is really excited about it. I think it is the big "toys" he gets to play with. Any of you go on the road with yours? What's it like? Any fun?

Hi, and welcome to the asylum!

I guess a lot of it depends on your job. Riding in the truck isn't an option for most of us, we are too busy working and running the home!
And if you have kids in school, well there's your answer - stay home!

It also depends what sort of job he ends up with. Some are home most weekends, others maybe every third or fourth, some longer than that.
So plan for being apart A LOT. Get him a good cellphone, if he hasn't one already, and if you can run to the cost, a laptop computer, so he can used the wifi at truckstops to write home.

You will communicate just as much as before, just in different ways.
If it helps, we tend to use email for 'business' stuff, like what's happening at home, at work, at school, etc. Maybe the cat gets sick, the heating breaks down, the car won't start, all that kinda everyday stuff.
I figured that he won't want to hear about it while he is driving, so I deal with it, and THEN tell him later, by email, so he can read it when he is safely parked up.

(you will find you learn basic plumbing, and wiring, some car maintenance, and will develop a complusion to repaint rooms for no reason.)
And the phone is for 'us'. We don't manage to talk every day, (I work graveyard a lot and just can't be awake at the times he wants to talk), but we do check in at least 3 times a week.

So I guess what I'm saying is that it is a new life for you, just as much as for him. You will miss him like crazy, and have days when you wonder why on earth you agreed to it.
But that's when the folk on this forum really excell, we are all in this and all understand the 'bad days'.
You will find no better place than this to get you thru starting this new chapter. We all vent, we all listen.

Oh, and did I mention chocolate.........?
LOL

Is this a private school or a training carrier ? If it's a private school you might have him look into expediting and driving a truck like this . Expediter carriers will let husbands train their wives . The sleeper is much more comfortable with a min-kitchen . It's an easier lifestyle . You run less hours but get a better rate . The driver gets to pick his loads . The smaller truck makes finding parking easier . Some campgrounds even accept them . The freight is time sensitive so you don't have long waits loading and unloading . Just something to consider . Check out our expediting forums .

Hope things are gong well! My husband and I only recently got married, but dated for two years. Learning the industry was hard at times, but what I have found is that we have a better relationship than most people that see their spouses everyday. He is gone 6-8 weeks at a time. We talk/text throughout the day. Then for hours at night. Make sure you get a good phone/cell plan. We talk about everything. We have too so he feels like he is a vital part of our family. Nothing is too big or small to talk about. Good communication is the best way to a strong relationship! Good Luck!
