Disabled kids show host draws criticism, praise

(CNN) -- A children's show host who was born with one hand is facing criticism from parents over her disability.

The BBC is receiving complaints about kids' show host Cerrie Burnell, who was born with one hand.

BBC spokeswoman Katya Mira said the corporation has received at least 25 "official" complaints recently about Cerrie Burnell, new host of two shows on the BBC-run CBeebies television network, which is aimed at children younger than 6.
The official complaints do not count the dozens of negative comments lodged in Internet chat rooms, Mira said.

If she's saying or doing something wrong, fine complain. If they're complaining because of her 'handicap' that's HORRIBLE.
If the woman is qualified to do the show, does it well and enjoys it - more power to her!
What better time to teach a child acceptance of others that are 'different' than when they are young? It may make them more accepting when they are older and run into children in special education classes at their school rather than belittling them, teasing them, or making them feel bad about themselves because they don't understand or don't care what it's like living their life.

Sorry, I know I'm in the ladies room - this post is just absurd. It really makes me mad people are so petty!

Hey 100% agreement with ya on this Jason. These people have no right to complain about this woman. I say "bully" to the BBC for using a host with a disability. If it shows nothing else to kids it does show that a person can do anything they want to. Nothing can stand in the way of hard work and perserverence.

That is just sickening that people are complaining! At least when someone complains about a homosexual or something I can understand even if I don't agree. But not wanting to discuss with your children that some people are born without hands, or other disabilites? That is just insane. They will encounter all sorts of people who are different than them in this world, including disabled kids who are mainstreamed into their school classes, how can a parent not want to discuss it?

This one really ticks me off. My uncle's ex-wife was born the same way, and she managed to run a household, raise two kids, and work just fine.

Having grown up with a handicapped brother, I guess it's just second nature to me to have no issues dealing with that sort of thing though.

These parents and others need to get over themselves, and learn to use this woman's example that you can do anything you put your mind to and want to do!

This is a non-issue all the way around, takes us neither forward nor back.

I think what gets me more here is that some people cannot accept the handicapped citizens of this world.

I have had the privilege of working with such people for a few years.

Whether a person is disabled by birth or by other means, we are all human and deserve FAIR treatment.

It's not that difficult to explain to a child. You say "she only has one hand because that's the way she was born. Like you were born with two. It's harder for her to do things but she's just like you"

When he was about eight, my son's school had a talk from a guy with no arms. He was amazing in the way he spoke to them, told them his story, and shook their hands with his foot!
Not all parents were happy though, even though there is a wheelchair bound girl at that same school.
But I wonder if some of that came from guilt. The school was near to a major car plant that closed down, and the folk laid off has no problem with being "disabled" from stress to claim welfare, so maybe it troubled their conscious to see real disability overcoming barriers.
Just mho.
