Safety

I think this would be the best place to ask this. I read in some threads in other parts of the forum that a lot of trucks' keys fit in other trucks. Do any of you get scared at night thinking that someone could break into your truck?

Also, when doing the on the road training, do you have to share a bed with the trainer or are there bunk beds?

Do the company schools get annoyed if you ask for a female trainer?

#1, never thought about it. It's really not that common for someone else's keys to unlock your truck. I once had a driver who had locked his keys inside asking other drivers to try their keys in his truck, and none of them worked.

#2 yes, there are bunk beds.

#3 They shouldn't get annoyed, but you might have to wait longer. Some companys actually require females to train females and males train males.

It's really simple to fix the multiple key issue, if you're concerned about someone using their key to get in while you sleep.

As an added safety precaution, many companies advise running the seatbelt through the door handles on both sides of the truck in areas of high risk.

I won't go into a lot of detail about taking the slack out of the belt...it won't take long to figure it out.

Personally, I would be more concerned about the idiot with a hammer, than the guy with another key.

With my husband's company, every truck is keyed exactly alike. Plus, it is a Freightliner so it isn't all that hard to get in to. When I am with him, there have been areas that I have run the seatbelt through the armrest just for piece of mind for myself. Once in the middle of the night, he had someone open his door when he was sleeping and steal his pants off the front seat. By the time he realized what was happening, the guy was gone. He thought he locked the door.

When my lovely wife goes with me,she always does the seat belt thing.I never really thought of it until she did it.But then,I'm a very light sleeper.(old military thang). My wife worries that I don't get enough rest because I seldom reach REM(Regardless of fatigue). But the seat belt idea is a good one.It may not stop someone who is determined. But,it will slow them down enough to give you time to react.Another idea that I've heard of yet never applied, was using a Logistic strap through both doors and pulled taught.

I don't understand how you're running the seat belt through the two door handles.

Run passenger side through pasg door and latch it as normal when wearing it and the same on the driver side. You cant run it across from oneside through both doors.

I know some people that use a small ratchet strap and run it from door to door and ratchet them together.

I think Texas-Nana misunderstood my idea. This is kinda what I was talking about. But I was suggesting using a logistic strap. You know, like the ones you would use in the trailer to secure a load.

The OTR company I drove for, had all of the Freightliner trucks keyed alike. I found out the hard way, after somebody helped themself to most of the tools I had.
The local company I drove for had Freightliners when I started driving for them, and changed out with new Freightliners, and about 5 years later changed out to International Pro-Stars, and they had all of those trucks keyed alike.
Their reason for that, is in case a driver locked his keys in his truck, another driver could be detoured to his location to get his door open.
