30-Year-Old Mother Dies After Gastric Band Surgery

Quote:
An overweight mother who died after gastric band surgery had the operation because she feared her daughter would be bullied at school due to her mother's weight.
Kerry Greaves, from Tang Hall, York in England, opted for the procedure following concerns that her 3-year-old daughter Melissa would be teased about her size.
After the surgery, the 30-year-old's stomach didn't heal properly and despite repeated operations to save her, she died on July 22.
"Kerry never thought there would be any problems with the surgery and neither did we," Greaves' mother Anne said. "She did it for her daughter. She didn't want her to be picked on at school.
"She had [friends] who had had the operation and they were fine," she continued. "She thought if they are fine I will be fine."
Gastric band surgery involves fitting an adjustable band around the upper section of the stomach to decrease appetite and accelerate weight loss. The process can lead to complications, including infections.

I had the gastric bypass in 2001 and at first it was great but know it seems that all kinds of problems keep popping up and the doc says that these are the side effects of it. i would not tell any one to have it done.

My best friend had a bariatric gastric bypass in 2003. She had no problems healing and is in the process of having all that extra skin removed and/or tightened. She still exercises every day and keeps in touch with other patients via an online support group.

Prior to the surgery there were certain foods that they warned her she would have trouble digesting properly. She still has issues with those foods and probably always will. Healthwise this surgery was the best thing that ever happend to her.

I don't know why some people have bad side effects or don't survive this surgery while others thrive. I just know I am glad my friend has been able to stop yo-yo dieting and will be around for many years to come.

I believe it is a personal choice, and agree with everything you all have said.
The thing that concerns me is the reason the woman had it done.
Society has set such standards as to what is beautiful and exceptable. Her heart was in the right place but her reasoning I still have to question. Teaching children is the answer to the problem. They should be taught to look past a persons apperance. We are all different, Trying to be somethign we are not is painful. Why? because cosmetics, diets the whole, this is what you should look like industry has poisned us and it continues to be inbeded into our children. I understand for health reasons not being overweight is essential. However to protect her daughter becasue the other kids would make fun. No way. Sorry but my child will be taught that all shapes sizes colors features are just the package that holds who that person really is.He will defend those that do not fit into what the "quote" un "quote" norm is.
I'm really glad your friends surgery was a success. It's all about how we feel about ourselves. Plus kids are cruel at times they will find anything to make fun of. It saddens me that that little girl could have been taught to ignore others. Rather then loose her mother. I pray that noone ever tells her why her mother died.
This surgery should be used as a last resort to health issues or potential health risks.
Just a thought

I've heard of a lot of problems with this type of surgery.

However, a man I worked with had a lap-band. He lost weight so fast, he didn't bother buying new clothes until he got down to where he wanted to be. And, I am not kidding when I say that he could turn around in his overalls. It worked good for him, and may be a viable alternative to the gastric bypass.

My girlfriend had the band surgery and at first it worked well, now I think her health problems are caused by it (6 years later) she is often "not feeling good", sometimes sick to her stomach and has other symptoms of the flu. Probably 2 days a week she is down and out, sometimes a week at a time.

She has been to the doc and they say everything is fine......I dont think so.

My uncle and aunt also had the bypass done, she did well he almost died! He couldnt even drink water and keep it down, lost about 100 pounds 12 weeks and had to have the surgery reversed, which they didnt think he would survive at the time...4 years later he is better but that was just way scarey.

It wasn't the band
My aunt (may she rest in peace)
Had her stomach stapled way back, but continued to binge and had to have it redone and even over time her stomach stretched and she gained her weight back
I guess life style is the trick
