Women impacting trucking in positive ways

Around the Bend: Women impacting trucking in positive ways

Quote:
It wasn’t that long ago — March 20 of 2007 to be exact — that the Women In Trucking (WIT) organization made its debut, then an unknown player in the unfolding drama known as heavy-duty trucking.

Men have held most of the leading roles for years and even now women comprise less than 6 percent of all professional commercial drivers.

Oh but what a difference women in the industry are making!

I think of Ellen Voie, WIT founder and president who has devoted herself tirelessly to the group, the goal of which is to encourage women to explore trucking as a career and also to help minimize the road blocks women sometimes face in the industry.

Interesting article. I got into trucking because of WIT and the movie "Aligator on the Zipper"
I was working as a Hotel exec, when a trucking group held an event at the hotel, they had several speakers and a screening of the film in the ballroon durig the event. As the hotel Event coordinator I had to stay in the room and make sure all went well. After listening to the speakers, watcing that film and other videos and powerpoints I caught the bug and decided to trade in my high heels for work boots an become a trucker. My friends and family thought I was crazy. However, I am loving it, and the personal satisfation of being able to drive the big rig far exceeds that of putting on a big event, or making the big sale.
Trucking has certinly made me a stronger more independant woman than any office or corporate job ever did.

I hope I can give back to the industry what the industry has given me.

I am a female truck driver. Got an email from a female writer/ author seeking female truck drivers (and males, couples, newbies, etc) for unique book project. She wants to bring the story of the long haul trucker to middle America, so that folks might understand the ups and downs, that they might get a peek into why we all do what we do, and how we do it. If interested, I can send you (whoever might be interested) private msg with her email address.

LOL, not a driver but I think as a truckers wife I am impacting the business as well....by being supportive of my driver and helping as much as I can he is a better person on the road and much more apt to not job hop, get road rage or just ticked off at the whole mess in general......for those of you brave enough to jump behind the wheel........
