Pet food regulation.....not good enough

The FDA says Ontario-based Menu Foods began to receive complaints about renal failure on Feb. 20 and began on Feb. 27 to conduct a series of taste tests on 40 to 50 dogs and cats, leading to the eventual death of at least nine cats. On March 16, the company issued its North American recall

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17728426...wsweek/page/2/

So from Feb 20 thru the 27th people complained but NOBODY did anything until the 27th and it took til the 16th of MARCH to let consumers know??? I am SO GLAD none of my babies had the horrible experience of getting this rotten food.....I can understand taking a day to confirm there is a problem BUT almost a MONTH????? SOMEONE should pay for this stupidity, and even then they will never beable to repalce the pets that have been lost or the ones that will have long trem health issues due to the food they ate.

Let me point out that I often deliver flour and gluten to animal feed places, and it gets the same testing that human food does. I have a Certificate Of Analysis (COA) that accompanies each load, and usually a sample is taken on the spot and tested before I can unload the product. It looks likes the company erred here in not acknowledging what was happening, but in what little defense hey can have, the contaminant was not something that anyone expected to be used in foods of any kin and they didn't have a test that would have revealed it. It took some pretty sophisticated testing to identify the cause here.

The poison used is not supposed to be used on wheat or any other food product and no one ever expected that it would be. As a result of those factors, the companies had no idea that they needed to test for it, and the gluten that was shipped to them did not indicate that it had been treated with such a chemical. That the Chinese felt that they needed to use such a powerful rodenticide in their wheat shipments says a lot about the conditions under which they are storing their wheat.

That a Canadian company felt it had to go outside canada to buy their Gluten, when they are a major wheat producing area, says much about how penny pinching the company must be.

I feed my three dogs a product made without wheat, corn, or soy, since corn and wheat can cause some skin problems in dogs. It costs me a little bit more, but they get what they need.

I myself am NOT a fan of the domestic cat BUT, no pet owner should have to deal with the tragedy that some of these people have had to deal with. I know MYSELF that I try to provide my babies with the best possible diet, I can NOT imagine loosing one due to the food I had purchased. There is no way anyone could make that tragedy "right".
