Unhappy Terrible weekend

I am currently up in North Chicago and got a call from my wife on Thursday evening telling me that my beloved Lab/Sheppard mix was not feeling well.

Come late Friday afternoon, things were looking worse so my wife called the Vet to bring him in. At 7am on Saturday, my wife called me and told me she was not waiting for his 10am appointment and was taking him in immediately.

By 830am my wife called and handed the phone to the Vet. The Vet said that after a series of tests, Bucky was showing signs of cancer. They were unable to pin point where the cancer was at this time, but that it was so aggressive that it was attacking his red blood cells. The Vet said that normally a dog has between 30-50% red blood cell count and Bucky had only 8%. In order to run more tests and try to determine where the cancer is, he would need an emergeny blood transfusion and that there was no guarantee it would help.

After a long discussion with the Vet as to what our options were and what would be best for Bucky, I had to make an extremely difficult decision. At 1045am on Saturday, my pet, my best friend and family member of 10+ years was put to sleep. I wasn't even there to say goodbye

He is in a better place now and that he will ALWAYS be in my heart. I LOVE YOU BUCKY!

This is the part of LIFE I just can't stand!

Unfortunately I have had to endure putting to sleep and watching dogs die of old age thru my life.
I HATE both! and will never get used to it.

But with that said, it's something that we all have to go thru, whether with 4 legged or 2 legged family members.

I too want to express my sympathy to you and your family on the loss of your pet.

I am sharing your pain. You are not alone ,I've recieved a call like that and it hurts. our pets rely on us to protect them and we cant let them suffer. I've had a lot of pets(extended family) and have nothing but love for our pets.

Yep, had a dog (a rescue/police dog drop-out) PTS because of cancer. When the cancer was first found, it was in her right front leg. People all over (many involved with rescue) donated money for surgery and chemo. Kirah did very well with it all, but 7 months later, the cancer came back and had spread through-out her body. She was ushered to the Rainbow Bridge while I was OTR. Sad to lose a friend like this when you're away at work.

Oh man! I'm terribly sorry as well. Being a pet owner myself they're hardly like pets, but family.

When my hubby first went OTR, we had a German Shepard that I had rescued several years earlier..

When we got Jack, we was about 4 years old, BALD and weighed 37 lbs. I was told that the best I could do for him was to put him to sleep. I didn't. And Jack became my own personal bodygaurd. My hubby told me he felt perfectly at ease going OTR knowing Jack was there.

We lost Jack to a brain tumor about 2 years after we rescued him. By the time he passed, he had the most beautiful coat, and wieghed 90 lbs.

We have rescued so many abused and neglected animals... so many have had to be put down simply because there was NOTHING else that could be done for them.

Jack was the one my hubby took the hardest. You would have thought he lost a brother or a very close friend. To this day he looks at big German Shepards, and you can just see the longing in his eyes!

I am so sorry you lost your baby. And to lose them without being able to say goodbye is so hard! I wish there was something I could say to make it easier....

Bonnie
