Truck kills police dog during suspect chase

Truck kills police dog during suspect chase
8/21/07
Tucson Citizen, AZ
Quote:
A Department of Safety police dog was killed by a semi truck in the line of duty Monday evening during a pursuit that also ended with a large seizure of marijuana, a DPS spokesman said in a news release.
Around 7:10 p.m. a DPS officer, with his police canine in tow, tried to stop a Chevrolet pickup for speeding on Interstate 10 just outside of Benson near milepost 287, Sgt. Tim Mason said.
The DPS officer activated his emergency lights and the pickup's driver accelerated and fled.
Less than a minute after the chase began, Mason said, the truck's driver pulled off the roadway and two people bailed out of the vehicle, leaving behind a large stash of marijuana.
He said the officer and his police dog got out of their vehicle and took off after the two suspects along I-10, where the canine was hit by the semi and killed.
The two people who fled from the pickup were arrested and taken into custody. Mason had no more information Monday night
