Father of boy killed by dog charged with manslaughter

Father of boy killed by dog charged with manslaughter
9/6/07
Quote:
The father of a 7-year-old boy who was fatally mauled by a pit bull was charged with manslaughter on Wednesday.

While Zachary King Sr., 30, faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, the state's sentencing guidelines would call for probation if he's convicted of second-degree manslaughter since he doesn't have a criminal record, prosecutors said.

Zachary King Jr. died Aug. 16. His family speculated the boy had gone down in the basement of their home to get a puppy. Police said the male pit bull tied up there, which had previously bitten the boy and at least two adults, went for the boy's throat.

The father got a gun and killed the dog, and was injured by the dog himself, but the boy was pronounced dead at a hospital of severe blood loss and asphyxia. The autopsy revealed that the dog bit the boy with such force it severed a vertebra.

According to the article, this dog has bitten people before. It should have been put down. ANY dog that bites without provocation should be put down.

My family had a pitbull/boxer cross that never hurt anyone. Okay, he scared the #### out of a few people, but sorry, that is what they get for harassing Mama when none of the guys are home!

I owned a small terrier chiwawa cross that I had put to sleep due to the fact that she snapped at anything that moved.

It's not always the breed. But in this case, he should be prosecuted. He KNEW that dog would bite without cause!

What kind of a parent would keep a large dog that has already bitten before around any child!? I can see if the dog bit a burglar, but with this dogs history

They keep them around for the money they bring in...These type of breeders if you want to call him that, usually have a waiting list for pups!
All to often these pups are raised for other purposes then a family pet.

This is just one story to hundreds that we don't hear about...and that is real SAD~

Pitbulls are not family dogs. They were bread for one thing, that's dog fighting. Why would someone keep such a dog out of a cage with children present is beyond me.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the pit bull breed itself. That would be saying that all men are jerks just because I married one that beat me up. Any dog will bite if they have been raised to do so. Any dog will turn mean if mistreated. A pit bull can be a great family pet.

Sorry but statistical probability says that more often than not they are no good dogs

Yes, but that is because sick people encourage those behaviors and breed specifically for them. The breed itself is no worse than any other.

Evary single time my family or Jr. and Henry have raised a pit bull they have been EXCEPTIONAL family dogs! I would and HAVE placed my life in the "hands" of these animals, knowing full well that me and my CHILDREN were safe! I KNOW these dogs are the exception and not the rule, but it is all in how they are raised!

I disagree. If you compare a pitbull to a golden retriever, I'd say a golden retriever would be a better choice for a family with children then a pitbull. Given the same situation where there's a child in the family, the chances of a pitbull harming the child is substantially greater than a golden retriever.

There are certain breeds that would be more suitable for a certain situation. The pitbull definitely isn't a family dog. It can be yes, but would you trust the breed to be a companion dog for your 3 year old who will constantly pull on his tail or ears? I won't.
