Pet question from newbee

Hello everyone, I'm a newbee. I'll begin truckdriver training on the 24 of September and will have tons of questions for you all in the future. My first questions is one about pets. I plan to get a puppy or rescue dog for my road companion. I would very much like the puppy or rescue dog to be a Pit Bull but NOT ONE FROM FIGHTING BLOODLINES or one that was used for fighting. We had two pits when I was child. They were both loving and very protective of my brother and I. I have always wanted another pit but always ended up with blue heelers or muts. My question is this: Do any of you or someone you know have a pit as a trucker pet? If so have you encountered any problems while traveling through communities that don't allow pits?

Most if not all trucking companies that allow dogs limit the size to no more than 40 pounds, with a 500 non refundable deposit.
For a dog that size you may have to wait till you buy your own truck
It is a long way up and down to have a dog that big

A puppy is probably not your best bet. Puppies require an ENORMOUS amount of attention and care in order to be socialized and raised right. Even if you kept him crated during your drive time and only worked with him during your down time, that could be pretty tough. There are a lot of rescue dogs out there who would love to be your faithful companion.

As an active "Rescue Transport Volunteer", I have often transported pit bull dogs. Here is a story about one petite pit bull I transported: [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link.
I have NEVER heard of anyone having problems form local (or State) authorities because of breed specific bans. HOWEVER: I would be careful going into Ontario Canada. They DO have a pit bull ban, and I have heard that they might confiscate dogs that even look like pit bulls although I haven't heard any drivers confirm this. Personally, I love pit bull dogs. They are intelligent and loving when brought up that way.
I applaud your desire to adopt a "rescue" pup. There are too many unwanted dogs now to buy a puppy from a breeder.

Thanks for the info everyone. This has certainly helped my decide on a rescue dog over a puppy. Any other information, helpful hints, advice you all can give me will be greatly appreciated. Roadkill I'll certainly contact you when I'm ready for a rescue dog. As I stated earlier I would prefer a pit but I would certainly give a mut a good home too!

I know of someone who raises the perfect pitbulls for what you want. But they are here in CA, and I don't know when they will have another litter available. But if you are interested later, let me know, and I will contact you when they have another litter.

As for a "resue" pit... not such a good idea. You have no real clue what it's history is. It could be a "rescued" fighting dog, and then you would have serious issues.

Hey, I'm starting school the 24th of Sept too and i have a pit. She's a red nose and she's 3. Her name is Lindsey and I love her to death. I was wondering the same thing.... I gotta find a way to get her on the truck. She's too attached to me to just leave her... couldn't do it.

I saw one company that said something like 50 pound limit but she's more like 70. That might sound big but its more that she's stalky. I measured her and she's like 21 inches from ground to top of her back.

I am wondering how the company would really know for sure. I know they want vet papers to prove they are up to date on their shots but I was thinking I could ask my vet to leave off her weight.... or mess the numbers around a little... I would feel much safer with her along and wouldnt think of leaving her... I guess we are in the same boat.

Want a pit?? There are thousands of them in rescues all over the U.S.
Could hook you up, if that's what you really want. All these dogs have already been tested for temperment, UTD on shots and been "altered" (which helps control aggression).

VET papers are a MUST if you have a pet on the truck anyway. It helps determine ownership, if there is any question, as well as provides proof the animal is UTD on shots. Even traveling to Canada, your pet will NOT GET IN without these records.

If you really want a rescue and a pit, getting hooked up this way, by roadkill is your best bet! If she says it has been temperment tested, it has been!
