Trucker told to leave lost dog behind or lose job

Trucker told to leave lost dog behind or lose job

Sato, a 2-year-old dog Shiba Inu, should be riding shotgun in a Freightliner cab tonight on his way home to Colorado.

But the 23-pound, red dog with a tan belly is instead on the loose in the Lower Hudson Valley.

His owner, trucker Allen Nelson, was hauling frozen bread to Atlanta early Thursday when the dog, who also answers to Little Toad, ran away from him at the westbound rest stop on Interstate 84 in East Fishkill.

Nelson, who was just outside Oklahoma City tonight, said the dog was spooked by the new truck and ran away. He was used to riding in a Kenworth. Nelson wanted to keep searching for his friend but said the frieght company told him to keep on trucking or find a new job.

People living near the rest stop have been searching for the dog, and ask that anyone who might have seen it call 845-494-1519 or 914-329-6067.

Nelson said he is offering a $500 reward.

More proof that the freight is more important than compassion for the trucker.

The poor guy! That stinks that they wouldn't let him look for his buddy! I hope that someone finds him and gets him back home.

I just emailed this to my wife for her to BROADCAST a BOL for this dog.
I just went by this rest area tonight, but didn't stop.

EAST FISHKILL - Sato is safe and sound and back in his big rig.

The 2-year-old dog, who slipped away last week from his truck-driving owner at an Interstate 84 rest stop, was scooped up in a big hug this afternoon by his best friend.

"Where have you been? I've been looking for you," said Alen Nelson of Denver, Colo.

Nelson last saw his pooch Jan. 2 at the westbound rest stop, not far from the Putnam County line. Since then, local animal advocates have been searching for the shiba inu dog, putting up posters and chasing down reported sightings. In a stroke of good luck and coincidence, the dog was spotted early this morning at the rest stop - the same day Nelson was to pass by on his way to Massachusetts.

Kathy Hamilton of Kent went to the rest stop about 7 a.m., where she found Sato. Hamilton is the Kent animal control officer, however, she has volunteered her own time in the search for Sato.

Hamilton and other volunteers waited with the red dog with a tan belly for Nelson to arrive. Sato remained skittish and would not let anyone touch him.

It wasn't until around 1 p.m., about 45 minutes before Nelson rolled up, that Rob Morrison of Mahopac was able to grab Sato and put a leash over his head.

I am glad that the driver got his dog back but if he had a leash on him this would not have happened. I take my dog with me and he is on a leash before the door is opened because any strange thing can spook them and off they run. and the reality is you can't spend 2 days looking for your dog that you should have controled anyway when your hired to do a job. Keep them on a leash for their saftey
