We're pretty good about keeping their cages clean, so there's not much odor. And when they're on the floor (yeah, we let them out to run around and play), they generally will give us clues (i.e., pulling on the carpet) if they need to go. We just pop them back in their cage, let them do their thing, and they'll come to the door of the cage to come out again. There is, however, the occasion accident which we are prompt to clean up.

I love it! That must've been a really great bird, Gal!

Have you ever used the pellets for their cage? I forget what they were called. I loved those. We had a guinea pig, he was adorable. Called him rodeo because he would kick his back legs up in the air like a rodeo bull. LOL

I miss that little guy. <sniff>

No, I've never tried the pellets. We started with pine shavings, but switched to aspen shavings since they don't have the aromatic oils that cedar and pine have.

One of our current piggies was found in a park by the township maintenance crew. She came to us in a recycle bin, so we initially called her Recycle... but my daughter thought that she needed a more appropriate name, hence she became Praline.

Praline also kicks out with her back legs. But the real cuties are when they are first born. We once got a baby piggie -- fit in the palm of my hand -- and unbeknown to us, she was already pregnant. She gave birth to three healthy piggies before she was even full grown. Newborn guinea pigs are SO cute. They are born fully furred, eat pellet food within about two days, and they "popcorn" very playfully -- just pop straight up into the air in quick hops. Cute little buggers!

Aspen, yeah, thats it. Man it really kept the odor down. I loved that stuff. LOL

Yeah, they are just adorable when they are tiny. We actually wanted to breed rodeo, but he got sick, so we couldn't. I really do miss the little guy. He was so tame, and I loved to hear him chirp when I would go in to my sons room in the morning to get him out. LOL

You want high Vet bills, try adopting retired greyhounds.

They are normally a mess after the racers get done with them, feed them crap 4D meat, teeth rotting.

The one we have now is allergic to wheat, just try and find a dog food that does not contain wheat in any form. Oh, and I figured that out, the Vet had no clue.

Did you find a dog food that you could use? Or do you have to make your own food for them?

Several yeas ago our daughter had a hamster. A guy I know asked to borrow it so he could mate it with theirs. We loaned this stud hamster out for a few days. He came back and about a week later went belly up. Johnny told us when she has babies come by and pick one out. After the babies got big enough we did. We got it home and the sucker got mean as crap. You could not handle her, The one we had would lay in your lap and nap while you watched TV. He was real gentle. The next day when we got up we found out that johnny had given us a loaded hamster. I think we had 9 of them suckers.

I love it, Tarps! Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

When I was a little kid, my brother had a hamster.... and after she gave birth to 13 babies, she somehow escaped from the cage. We couldn't find her, so we wound up giving the baby hamsters to a pet store.

As a grown woman who has raised her own children, I have empathy for Momma Hamster. Heck, if I gave birth to 13 kids at one time, I think I'd run away, too.
