Catprint Red Bob Barker backs LA pet spay law

Bob Barker backs LA pet spay law
2/2/08
Quote:
LOS ANGELES - Urged on by retired "The Price is Right" host Bob Barker and a throng of supporters, the Los Angeles City Council has taken steps to require spaying and neutering of most pet cats and dogs by 4 months of age.
So much applause erupted Friday when Barker stood to endorse the idea that council President Eric Garcetti urged just a quick clap because time for public comment was limited.

Barker replied: "Councilman Garcetti, that's the most beautiful sound I've heard in months since I left 'Price is Right.'"
Barker noted that for decades he closed his show by urging viewers to help control the pet population and that the audience was filled with people who had worked on the problem for years.
"Now I'd like to think that all of us working together have made a difference," he said. "But it's not enough, and the only answer is legislation. And to be more specific, the only answer is this ordinance."

Barker said 4 months is important because animals can breed at very young ages, but he noted that under the law it would only take a letter from a veterinarian to delay surgery to 5 or 6 months of age.
Other advocates said the law would have plenty of exceptions, including for licensed breeders and show animals.
Minus four members, the council voted 10-1 in favor of the ordinance. A second vote on the measure is required before it can become a city law.

Glad to see some people are at least trying to protect our four legged friends.....too many shelters, too many abused animals.

Thats why in my breeder contract ALL my puppies are sold on a spay/neuter contract unless they are bought SPECIFICALLY for a show home, and it also says if new owner can no longer care for them, they are to come back to me for re-home or to live with me forever, I NEVER want one of my precisous babies to end up like so many do, no fault of their own.

My only problem with this is the 4 month age. The majority of vets (the more respectable ones, at least around here) say no earlier than 6 months otherwise you can have so many problems. I will never live in LA or any other place that forces someone to spay/neuter their animals. I have 3 female dogs, 2 of which are not spayed. The one that is I got from my sister. I get pressure from everyone to do that to them, but I will not. But, if that is something that you want to do, then I have no problem with it. Just the 4 months old thing, I find, is a bit too much.

What is the reason that you do not want to have them fixed. Are you going to bread them? Cal. will allow breading so long as it is regulated. Otherwise if you are just avoiding it out of spite then you are abusing them to begin with as far as I am concerned. You may not be in the 97% of people that allow your dog to get pregnant so that we can go ahead and kill off the babys but there are a lot of them that do. What was that?, you could give them away if that happened? Yes, true and then in return they cant afford to get their dogs fixed or dont want to, from now on about 65% of the dogs that are born due the someone not wanting to get their dog fixed, are killed. Now that may be ok with you but it is not ok with me.
Just a thought, Are you ok with abortions as well? Just a thought...

I am ok with abortions. And no, I am not going to breed my girls. Maybe one day with my husky, but I don't know. I don't want to get into an abortion argument, or a spay/neutering argument. I could go on about spaying and neutering, but I am sure that the words will hit a brick wall with no effect. You won't change my mind on it, and I know I won't change your's. Like I said, I have no problem with spaying and neutering animals. It's the whole being forced to that LA is doing. And at such a very young age. That is what I have the problem with.

Four months would have been good for two of my cats - who were FULL adults at 4 months old!! I took the female in to be spayed, telling everyone she was in heat and they didn't believe me. Once they got her open and completed the spay, they said, yup, FULL BLOW HEAT - at four months old!!

I think four months is fine for cats and small breed dogs but it should be six to eight months for large breed dogs and I'm sure your vet will give you a letter to get that delay no problem. This isn't meant to force anyone responsible to do anything wrong - this is for all the idiots who never fix their pets.

If you have a purebred and want to keep him/her whole, you can do so if you are responsible and prove it with training, showing, obedience, etc.

I've seen SO SO SO many unfixed male dogs that would be SO MUCH happier if they were fixed. And I've NEVER EVER EVER heard of a dog attacking ANYONE HUMAN who was FIXED - EVER!!

I've never had an unfixed pet and never plan on it.

Ok, we will avoid the other issue but another ? would be, if there was an epidemic in our country (euthenizing of 10's of thousands of animals per year in Cal alone) and it was going to spread and get worse as the years went by if we did not use a cure that we already have, then would you avoid the cure in spite of the solution. I guess that is where I had the other issue in the same category. We murder millions of babies in the same way even though there are other solutions. The just maybe dont pertain to us so we say screw it who cares!!!!

Thanks for that response Brenda. You brought up some great points that I was a bit to irritated to think of at the time. But darn well true none the less. This is an epidemic right now and we have to do something to slow down the disease.
