Mom forced to live in car with dogs

Mom forced to live in car with dogs

Quote:
SANTA BARBARA, California (CNN) -- Barbara Harvey climbs into the back of her small Honda sport utility vehicle and snuggles with her two golden retrievers, her head nestled on a pillow propped against the driver's seat.
Truckers Californian Barbara Harvey says she is forced to sleep in her car with her dogs after losing her job earlier this year.

A former loan processor, the 67-year-old mother of three grown children said she never thought she'd spend her golden years sleeping in her car in a parking lot.
"This is my bed, my dogs," she said. "This is my life in this car right now."
Harvey was forced into homelessness earlier this year after being laid off. She said that three-quarters of her income went to paying rent in Santa Barbara, where the median house in the scenic, oceanfront city costs more than $1 million. She lost her condo two months ago and had little savings as backup.

"It went to hell in a handbasket," she said. "I didn't think this would happen to me. It's just something that I don't think that people think is going to happen to them is what it amounts to. It happens very quickly, too."

Harvey now works part time for $8 an hour, and she draws Social Security to help make ends meet. But she still cannot afford an apartment, and so every night she pulls into a gated parking lot to sleep in her car, along with other women who find themselves in a similar predicament. It's sad. But not news worthy.

The actual "story" should have been. Woman has money, refuses to move to avoid being homeless.

We live within our means. Social Security was never intended to make payments on $1 million houses.

MOVE...just do it..don't whine.

In Santa Barbara, a "$1M" house is little more than a converted chicken shed. When my mother's last husband died, she sold the house for $2M, but it had been falling apart for 15 years. She bought a "trailer space" in a park for about $800k for her tiny trailer.

Stick around, I'm gonna post the view from my sisters $75k back porch. I'd use mine. But hers are on my camara.

At least she still has a car to sleep in. Rich neighborhoods want their fast food and retail, but they have priced lots of people out of the area.

Guess she should have left before she got that far in debt. Thats what you call living above your means. Its sad that she is having to live in her car and that she can't stay with her kids but I would have gotten out while the getting was good.

Again...this woman should move. Home isn't where the heart is anymore. It's where your sanity lies.

This is a view of what Social Security CAN afford if your willing to move!!!
