Stopsign Beware of the 'I found your lost dog' scam

Beware of the 'I found your lost dog' scam

Los Angeles Times, CA

The pitch: "I found your lost dog!"

The scam: A phone call from someone who reports finding a beloved pooch is usually cause for celebration. But Western Union warns that it could be a cruel scam. The company has received reports from owners of lost dogs who say they've been called by people identifying themselves as truckers. The dog, a supposed trucker says, was found along a highway.

Not only that, but these "people" are answering ads in "Craigs List" and newspapers as well as other online advertising. They often ask the "mark" to send large sums of "reward" money via Western Union.....and give a phony local address.

There are even people using a similar scam selling "pure-bred" dogs on line and people locally have lost several hundred dollars to these criminals.
I, personally, have "investigated" several of these fake addresses here in Grand Rapids, and the "homes" were either non-existent, business addresses or the address that was picked out of a phone-book.
